ELON, N.C. – Elon University women's lacrosse delivered a 17-12 win against William & Mary in its conference opener on March 30, 17-12.

"It was a physical game," said head coach
Josh Hexter. "William & Mary was physical the entire game and I thought our girls did a really good job of attacking the pressure and, for the most part, remaining poised throughout the whole game."
HOW IT HAPPENED

Sammy Fisher scored both of Elon's first two goals of the night as the Phoenix took a 2-1 lead with 12:10 on the clock. Both teams then went on 3-0 runs, but the Tribe's Sam Van Gieson scored with four seconds on the clock to tie the game at five.
-The momentum swung in favor of the Phoenix at the start of the quarter as Elon scored four unanswered goals to go up 9-5. Following back-to-back goals by William & Mary, the teams traded goals the rest of the half to make the score 11-8 at the intermission.
-Elon scored two of the three goals in the third quarter to up its lead to four heading into the final 15 minutes of play (13-9).
-With 4:44 remaining in the contest and the Phoenix holding a 14-10 advantage,
Cierra Hopson ignited a 3-0 run to give Elon it's largest lead of the game (17-10). William & Mary managed to scored two goals in the final seconds, but it was not enough as Elon came away with the win.

Margaret Stephan totaled a season-high four goals to lead both teams, followed by
Gillian Curran,
Kaley Ehnow,
Kaitlyn Michaud, Fisher and
Bella Feldmann followed with two apiece.
-Curran matched her career high in draw controls (12), once again tying for second most in a single game by a Colonial Athletic Association player. The senior also recorded 12 draws earlier this month against Campbell on March 2.

Kailee Follette,
Emma Flynn,
Kiley Selquist and
Paige Brown tied for the team high in ground balls (3). Follette and Flynn also posted two caused turnovers each to pace the Phoenix.
-The maroon and gold has scored in the double digits in 10 of its 11 games this season.
-Elon is now on a five-game winning streak against the Tribe, owning a 6-1 all-time record.
-With the win, the maroon and gold is now 5-6 (1-0 CAA) on the season.
