BOSTON – Starting pitchers
Brian Edgington and
Shea Sprague both turned in strong outings as Elon University baseball split its CAA doubleheader at Northeastern on Sunday, April 10 at Friedman Diamond. The Huskies (16-5-1, 3-6 CAA) took Game One 1-0 and the Phoenix (15-16, 3-6) responded with a 1-0 final in Game Two.
Â
"Really impressed with both Brian and Shea today," said head coach
Mike Kennedy. "Two of the better outings you will see back-to-back. Both of those guys filled up the zone and competed their tails off. They were outstanding and really fun to watch. Wish we could have rewarded Edgington with a better day offensively."
ON THE MOUND
Edgington (4-2) tossed eight scoreless innings but was responsible for the deciding run in the ninth. The Hatboro, Pa. native held the hosts to just two hits, did not walk anyone and recorded eight strikeouts.
Ben Simon issued one intentional walk and gave up one hit in 0.2 innings out of the pen.
Â
In the second game, Sprague (3-0) pitched seven scoreless frames with one hit, two walks and five strikeouts.
Kyle Greenler picked up his second save of the season after fanning two batters and allowing two hits in 2.0 innings of work.
AT THE PLATE
Elon was held to just one hit in the opening game as
Samuel Frontino finished 1-for-2 with a base on balls. The Chardon, Ohio native then turned in another 1-for-2 effort with a walk in the second game.
Alex Iadisernia hit 1-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base and
Will Vergantino also went 1-for-4 with an RBI.
THE RUNDOWN
Edgington retired the first 12 batters he faced before the leadoff man reached on catcher's interference in the bottom of the fifth. After the runner reached second on a ground out to third, Edgington got the next batter to miss on an 0-2 pitch for out number two. Northeastern elected to send the runner home on a single to short, but Reynolds throw home was in time as
Parker Haskin made the play at the plate.
Â
In the home half of the ninth, JP Olson doubled to left to bring Edgington's outing to an end. A sacrifice bunt from Spenser Smith then moved Olson up to third. Mike Sirota followed with a single to third before Elon opted to intentionally walk Luke Beckstein. Max Viera then hit a ground ball to short for the walk-off fielder's choice.
Â
The Phoenix took the lead in the fourth inning of Game Two. Iadisernia hit a one-out single through the left side and then stole second. Following a walk by
Cole Reynolds, a Vergantino base knock through the left side was enough for Iadisernia to trot home. Elon had a chance to add to its 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth as Frontino walked, advanced to second on a
Carlos Marte sac bunt and took third on a wild pitch. However, he was left stranded as
Justin Cassella went down swinging.
Â
Elon brought in Greenler to pitch the eighth, and Northeastern quickly applied the pressure as two hits and sac bunt placed runners on the corners. The Georgetown, Mass. Native was unfazed though and proceeded to strike out the next two batters to get out of the frame. Elon's defense then turned a 6-4-3 double play in the ninth to secure the victory.
Â
"We really played solid defense today as well," added Kennedy. "Vergantino was outstanding. Cassella made a great play early and Reynolds had a heads up play that kept them off the board."
