Baseball Defeats UNCW 2-1 in Extra Innings

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Carlos Marte scored from third on a wild pitch and Elon University baseball defeated UNCW 2-1 in 10 innings on Friday, April 29 at Brooks Field. With the win, the Phoenix is now 19-21 overall and 4-9 in CAA play.

ON THE MOUND
Ben Simon secured the win to improve to 2-0 on the season. The East Windsor, N.J. native gave up just one hit and one walk while striking out three in 2.1 scoreless innings out of the pen. Brian Edgington held the hosts to one run on three hits and two walks, adding eight strikeouts in a 6.2-inning start. Liam Dabagian struck out two and allowed one hit in one scoreless inning in relief.

AT THE PLATE
Luke Stephenson homered in a 1-for-5 outing, Parker Haskin went 1-for-3 with a walk and Cole Reynolds also batted 1-for-3. Will Vergantino hit 1-for-4, Alex Iadisernia finished 1-for-5 and Charlie Granatell doubled in a 1-for-5 performance.

THE RUNDOWN
A pitcher's duel between Edgington and UNCW starter R.J. Sales, the Seahawks (23-17, 8-5) finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth as Matt Suggs hit a solo home run to left field. UNCW looked to add to its 1-0 lead in the home half of the seventh as a leadoff single and a sacrifice bunt placed a runner in scoring position with one away. Edgington induced a fly out to left before Dabagian entered the game and struck out the next batter to get out of the frame.

Haskin drew a leadoff walk in the eighth, took second on a Marte sac bunt and reached third on a Granatell ground out to short. Elon couldn't drive in the tying run though as Connor Coolahan flew out to center field. After Iadisernia grounded out to first to start the ninth, Stephenson came through in the clutch with a game-tying blast to left field. UNCW quickly placed a runner on second with one away in the bottom of the inning, but Simon struck out a pair to send the game to extra innings.

Momentum shifted to the Phoenix as Marte was hit by a pitch and Granatell followed with a double to left with one out in the 10th. The Seahawks brought in a new hurler in Hunter Hodges, who walked Coolahan to load the bases. Hodges then struck out Iadisernia, but a wild pitch was enough for Marte to come around and score the deciding run. Simon hit the first batter he faced in the bottom of the 10th, but took care of the next three batters to bring the game to a close.
