WILMINGTON, N.C. – Elon University baseball could not slow down the UNCW offense as the Phoenix (19-22, 4-10 CAA) came up short 16-7 on Saturday, April 30 at Brooks Field.
ON THE MOUND
Kyle Greenler (3-2) took the loss after giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits through 1.2 innings. Starter
Cam Seguin was roughed up for four runs on as many hits and two walks. He added two strikeouts to his totals in two complete innings of work. Elon also used
Sam DiLella,
Joe Savino,
Trevor Kirk and
Ben Sieracki.
AT THE PLATE
Alex Iadisernia doubled, walked once, score a run and drove in two more with a 2-for-3 day at the plate.
Will Vergantino also doubled with two RBIs as he finished 1-for-4.
Griffin Arnone turned in a 1-for-1 effort as he drove in a run while
Luke Stephenson hit 1-for-5 with an RBI.
Charlie Granatell scored three times and earned a base on balls in a 1-for-2 performance,
Connor Coolahan came around twice and added two walks, and
Nicholas Carr batted 1-for-1 with a run.
THE RUNDOWN
Elon manufactured some early offense as the Phoenix plated two runs on as many hits in the first inning. After Ganatell singled to center field and Coolahan walked, the pair came home on an Iadisernia double to left. However, the hosts responded in the home half of the inning as an Ethan Baucom hit to center scored Dillon Lifrieri from second. The Seahawks (24-17, 9-5) then jumped ahead 3-2 in the second as Matt Suggs hit a two-run blast to left. Elon retook the lead 4-3 in the third as Granatell crossed the plate on a Stephenson base hit to left center and Iadisernia scored on a wild pitch. UNCW again came up with a response, though, as a sac fly to right and an RBI single to left put the hosts back in front 5-4.
Another two runs in the bottom of the fourth made it a 7-4 deficit. Vergantino got the Phoenix back to within a run as Granatell and Coolahan scored on his double to the gap in left. That was as close as the maroon and gold would get as the Seahawks pushed across two more runs in the sixth and pulled away with a seven-run bottom of the seventh. Elon did get one run back in the ninth. Carr led off with a single to left center and took second on a wild pitch.
Andrew DiMisa then walked and
Alex Duffey reached on a fielding error to run the bags full. Arnone pinch hit for Iadisernia and hit an 0-2 pitch to center field as Carr touched home to round out the scoring.
