Phoenix Set for NCAA East Prelims at Indiana

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women's track and field trio of Maria Ahm, Leandra Lorenz and Kaitlin McGoogan is set to compete this week at the 2022 NCAA East Preliminaries held on Indiana University's Haugh Track & Field beginning on Thursday, May 26.

Meet Notes
• The NCAA Preliminary meets is the first round of the NCAA Championships with athletes qualifying for the regionals after finishing in the top-48 of their individual events or as a member of a top-24 relay team on their respective regional qualifying list (East or West).
• From there, the top-12 finalists in each event at each regional meet advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, which this year returns to the University of Oregon and the recently renovated Hayward Field on June 8-11.
 
Meet the Elon Qualifers
• The Phoenix had three athletes qualify for the NCAA East Prelims in Ahm, Lorenz and McGoogan. This is the second straight year that Elon has had three members qualify for the NCAA regional meet.
• Ahm qualifies for her second regional meet as the Holbæk, Denmark, native punched her ticket in the 10,000-meters. Ahm sits as the highest-ranked Phoenix athlete heading to the preliminaries at No. 28th in the 10,000-meters with her season-best time of 34:07.87 that she set at the Virginia Challenge on April 22.
• Lorenz qualifies for her first regional meet with the redshirt sophomore set to compete in the 1,500-meters. The Kleinmachnow, Germany, native was the Colonial Athletic Association champion in the 1,500-meters and is ranked 39th in the region at her personal-best time of 4:19.73 which was also set at the Virginia Challenge.
• McGoogan rounds out the Phoenix qualifiers in the hammer throw as the 42nd-ranked athlete in the East region. The Jamestown, N.C., native posted a personal-record throw of 59.13m in the hammer at the Mount Olive Final Qualifier meet on May 15, breaking her own school-record in the event. This will be McGoogan's first trip to the East Preliminaries.

Up Next
The top 12 finishers in each event will move on to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon from June 8-11. The meet will take place at the historic Hayward Field on the Oregon campus.
