Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader at Delaware

NEWARK, Del. – After inclement weather canceled Saturday's game, Elon University baseball won both games of a doubleheader at Delaware on Sunday, May 8 at Bob Hannah Stadium. The Phoenix (22-22, 7-10 CAA) took the first game 5-1 in seven innings before shutting out the Blue Hens (22-22, 6-11) in Game Two, 4-0.

"Couple big wins for our guys today," said head coach Mike Kennedy. "Tough weekend holed up in the hotel watching it rain. Thought our guys handled it well and were ready to play."

ON THE MOUND
In Game One, Brian Edgington (6-3) gave up one run on five hits and a walk in the complete game victory. The Hatboro, Pa. native finished the outing with five strikeouts. Game Two saw starter Shea Sprague (4-2) get the win as the freshman out of Hanover, Mass. threw five scoreless innings. He scattered four hits, issued one intentional walk and struck out three. Also making appearances out of the pen were Liam Dabagian, Kyle Greenler, Joe Savino and Ben Simon.

"Pitched it really good today," continued Kennedy. "Edgington with a complete game and Sprague had another quality start. Dabagian, Greenler, Savino and Simon all pitched well out of the pen. Four innings between them giving up zero runs and just one hit. We also played really good defense and the play that Alex Iadisernia made in center field in the fifth inning was huge."

AT THE PLATE
In the first game, Cole Reynolds went 1-for-2 with a walk and one run scored. Griffin Arnone hit 1-for-3 and scored once, Parker Haskin also batted 1-for-3 and drove in a run, and Iadisernia contributed a 1-for-4 effort with one RBI and a stolen base.

Arnone turned in a 1-for-2 outing in Game Two, adding one run and one base on balls to his totals. Will Vergantino tripled, drove in a run and came around once as he went 1-for-3. Iadisernia batted 1-for-3 with a walk and a run while Haskin brought in two runs with a 1-for-4 outing.

THE RUNDOWN
A five-run top of the second inning was all the offense Elon needed in the first game of the doubleheader. After Arnone reached on a bunt single and Reynolds singled to right field, Delaware could not field a sacrifice bunt by Vergantino as the Phoenix loaded the bases. The maroon and gold then opened the scoring as Arnone came home on a Haskin RBI ground out to second. Back-to-back walks by Carlos Marte and Charlie Granatell then made it a 2-0 advantage and Connor Coolahan was hit by a pitch to make it 3-0. Marte crossed the plate on an Iadisernia fielder's choice to push the lead to 4-0, and a delayed double steal by Iadisernia and Granatell gave the Phoenix a 5-0 cushion.

Delaware got a run back in the home half of the fourth. Joseph Carpenter led off the inning with a double to the gap in left, then moved up to third on a Jake Dunion fly out to right. Aidan Kane then brought in Carpenter with a double to right. A wild pitch allowed Kane to reach third base, but Edgington fooled catcher Nick Vera on a 3-2 pitch to limit the damage.

In Game Two, Elon broke through with one run in the top of the third. Delaware's right fielder misread the ball off Vergantino's bat as the redshirt freshman from Lumberton, N.J. led off with a standup triple to the gap in right. He then scored on a Haskin ground out to second. Elon tacked on three more runs in the fourth as Vergantino was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Haskin caught the defense off guard with a bases-loaded bunt single, and Reynolds scored on a wild pitch for the 4-0 lead.

The Blue Hens applied the pressure in the fifth inning as a one-out hit to right and a double to left moved runners into scoring position. Elon was able to get out of the jam though as Vergantino squeezed a ball in foul territory and Iadisernia made a diving catch in center field. Delaware had another opportunity in the ninth as Carpenter singled to left center, Dunion walked and a wild pitch moved the pair up to second and third. However, Simon induced a pop up to Coolahan to end the game.
