Football Knocks Off No. 14 William & Mary, 35-31

Williamsburg, Va. – The Elon University football team outscored No. 14 William & Mary 25-3 in the second half, including the final 19 unanswered, to overcome a 28-10 halftime deficit in a 35-31 win Saturday at Zable Stadium.
 
Elon's first lead came on Jalen Hampton's third rushing touchdown of the season, with just 1:07 to play, to give the Phoenix the 35-31 victory.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • William & Mary scored on its first two possessions to quickly go ahead 14-0.
  • Jalen Hampton had his first rushing touchdown of the game late in the first quarter to make it 14-7. Skyler Davis followed with his 58th career field goal, a 30-yarder, that made it 14-10.
  • William & Mary closed the half with a pair of touchdowns for the 28-10 lead.
  • Bryson Daughtry caught an 18-yard pass for a touchdown in the third quarter that made it 28-16, but the Tribe hit a field goal for the 31-16 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
  • Hampton scored from two yards out with 9:03 to play to make it 31-23.
  • Marcus Hillman forced and recovered a fumble on the next William & Mary possession and Elon scored with 4:43 to go on a DJ Moyer one-yard plunge. The Phoenix failed on the two-point conversion and trailed 31-29.
  • William & Mary went three-and-out on its next drive and Elon quickly took the lead on a seven-play, 69-yard drive that concluded with the Hampton 15-yard run.
 



NOTES AND STATS
  • Elon has now won five straight games against FCS opponents dating back to last year.
  • Jalen Hampton finished with 28 carries for 145 yards and three touchdowns. He had 34 carries a week ago. It was his second consecutive 100-yard rushing game.
  • This was Elon's 12th win over a ranked opponent in the last six years and the sixth straight fall season in which the Phoenix earned at least one win over a ranked opponent.
  • After allowing 284 yards of offense in the first half, Elon allowed just 117 in the second. The Phoenix have allowed just three points in the second half over the past three games.
  • Elon improved to 5-0 under head coach Tony Trisciani went rushing for at least 200 yards, doing so for the second straight game. Elon had a season-high 240 yards rushing against William & Mary.
  • Bo Sanders got his first career interception on a William & Mary hail mary attempt at the end of the first half.
  • Jeff Yurk boomed a career-long 65-yard punt early in the third quarter that was downed on the one-yard line. He later had a 52-yard punt that was also downed at the one.
  • Prior to tonight, all ten of Elon's touchdowns had either been thrown by or rushed in by Matthew McKay. Four of the five touchdowns came on the ground by rushers other than McKay.
 
UP NEXT
  • Elon returns home for two consecutive games beginning Saturday beginning Saturday against Richmond for Family Weekend. The game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. kick.
  • Elon will then host Towson Oct. 8 at 2 p.m.
