Richmond, Va. – Elon freshman
Grace Gelhaus has been voted as Elon's second CAA Rookie of the Week this season. Gelhaus joins her first-year teammate
Gabby Hoschek as recipients of the CAA Rookie of the Week award during the 2023 season.
Gelhaus has strongly contributed throughout Elon's season thus far on the left wing, starting in 10 of 11 matches. After contributing three assists in her first seven games, Gelhaus found her scoring touch this past week against the Hampton Lady Pirates. Gelhaus would score a trio of goals in the 9-0 victory, contributing to Elon's largest win and most goals in the Phoenix' Division I era.
The Phoenix broke numerous records against Hampton. The nine goals were the most in the Division I era for Elon and the goal difference of nine is the largest in Division I history and the largest in almost 35 years. Three different players scored multiple goals with
Jordan Green and
Lydia Totten both scoring a pair of goals in the victory.
Gelhaus becomes the first Phoenix since Taylor Paradoski in 2018, to score a hat-trick in a match. Gelhaus also becomes the first freshman since 2017 to score three goals in a match, joining Meredith Christopher who bagged three against Liberty in her collegiate debut. Christopher would later go on to secure the CAA Rookie of the Year award later that season.
Gelhaus and the Phoenix will return to action this upcoming Thursday as they return to Rudd Field for a pair of games against Delaware and Drexel. The kickoff time with the Blue Hens is set for 7:00 P.M.
