Elon Fights For 75-68 Victory Over Georgia State

ATLANTA, GA. — The Elon women's basketball team (2-4) earned a 75-68 victory over Georgia State (3-2) in their final matchup of the Georgia State Thanksgiving Tournament. Elon finished the tournament 1-1 with the victory over the Panthers.
 
Three Phoenix players scored double digits led by Vanessa Taylor with a season-high 15 points. Ajia James matched her season high with 14 points and Jessica Booth also tallied a season-high 12 points. 
 
"I'm really excited to be able to end the holiday tournament with a victory," said head coach Charlotte Smith. "I felt like we came out and executed on both sides of the ball. It always is helpful when you shoot the ball well, so I'm just excited to package this win and hopefully keep the momentum going."
 
THE RUNDOWN
  • The Phoenix came out hot offensively gaining a quick 14-3 edge over the Panthers. From there, Elon went on a 9-4 run to close the quarter on top 23-7. Vanessa Taylor and Ruby Willard led eight scoring Phoenix players in the quarter with five points apiece.
  • Georgia State brought momentum to start the second quarter but Elon quickly responded with a jumper from Iycez Adams, second-chance layup from Jessica Booth and a Ajia James three-pointer giving the Phoenix a 32-14 advantage. The teams traded baskets to close the quarter ultimately with Elon ahead 40-22. As a team, Elon shot 50% (10-for-20) from the field while going 3-for-6 from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes. Defensively, the Phoenix forced six turnovers and grabbed 23 boards.
  • Again, the Panthers came out scoring first in the third quarter cutting the lead to 16 at 43-27. The Phoenix came back with an 8-0 run thanks to a layup from Adams and back-to-back three-pointers from James and Willard. Georgia State outscored Elon 13-7 in the final five minutes of the quarter however, but Elon still held a firm 58-40 lead going into the final 10 minutes of play.
  • Taylor scored the first four points in the fourth quarter for the Phoenix. The Panthers came back strong with a 19-4 run to get within single digits at 66-59 late in the fourth quarter. Elon responded with a 7-2 run to pull ahead 73-61 before Georgia State scored six straight points cutting the Phoenix lead to six. A Taylor layup sealed an Elon victory 75-68. 
NOTES
  • Vanessa Taylor led Elon in scoring with 15 points going 5-for-13 from the field and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. 
  • Ajia James followed Taylor matching her career high 14 points including four three-pointers from downtown. 
  • Jessica Booth went 5-for-10 from the field racking up 12 points in 28 minutes of play.
  • Maya Johnson paced the Phoenix on the boards grabbing a season-high seven rebounds. Jessica Booth and Vanessa Taylor followed both recording season-highs with six boards apiece.
  • Regina Walton led the team with five assists while Iycez Adams and Johnson each recorded a block.
  • As a team, Elon shot a season-high 46.7% (7-for-15) from beyond the arc.
  • Elon held Georgia State to 13.6% (3-for-22) from three-point range.
  • The Phoenix outrebounded the Panthers 41-37 while outscoring them in the paint 40-36.

  • The maroon and gold travel to Old Dominion University on Tuesday to take on the Monarchs. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. inside Chartway Arena.
