Women’s Basketball Drops Tight Game At UNCG

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Despite having one of its best defensive games this season, the Elon women's basketball team (2-7) could not rally enough offensively, falling 52-47 to UNCG (7-3) on Sunday afternoon in Greensboro Coliseum.

Maraja Pass tied her career-high 16 points to lead the Phoenix going 6-for-13 from the field and 4-for-5 from the free-throw line. Iycez Adams followed with 14 points while also tying her career-high 10 boards, recording her first career double-double.

"I am very proud of our effort today. I feel like we fought for 40 minutes," said head coach Charlotte Smith. "We have some missing pieces and people coming back for the first time and I am just really thrilled in thinking about the future of this team and projecting how good we can be. We played a great game for 40 minutes and we fought so that's all I can ask of our team. We will focus forward on getting back to full strength and trying to get better everyday."

THE RUNDOWN
  • UNCG got on the board first and gained a 6-3 lead midway through the opening quarter. Elon responded playing strong defensively forcing back-to-back shot clock violation turnovers with just under three minutes remaining. The Spartans scored two more buckets before a jumper from Regina Walton ended the first quarter with the Phoenix trailing 11-5.
  • Again, the Spartans scored first in the second quarter and went on a 13-8 run to gain their first double-digit lead of the frame. The Phoenix came back and closed the half on a 7-2 run that included a three from downtown by Diamond Monroe to get Elon within six at 26-20 entering halftime.
  • Elon outscored UNCG 6-2 to start the third quarter, trimming the deficit to 28-26. The teams traded baskets throughout the remainder of the quarter, however the Phoenix used a 5-0 run at the last two minutes of the quarter to get within three points at 40-37 to end the third.
  • A driving layup from Iycez Adams kicked off the final 10 minutes of play followed by another three from Monroe giving Elon their first lead of the contest at 42-41 with 5:48 remaining in the game. UNCG outscored the Phoenix 11-5 in the final five minutes to seal a 52-47 victory.
