Elon Falls to Wingate On Saturday

ELON, N.C. — A new career-high point total for Diamond Monroe was not enough to stop a hot-shooting Wingate (5-2), as Elon University women's basketball team (2-6) fell to the Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon, Dec. 2, at Schar Center.
 
Three Phoenix scored in double-figures led by Iycez Adams who netted 13­ points. Maraja Pass and Diamond Monroe followed with 10 points apiece.
 
"First, I'd just like to say kudos to Coach Ann Hancock who coached me at North Carolina and is the head coach for Wingate women's basketball team. They were very well coached, very well prepared and they played an outstanding game today," said head coach Charlotte Smith. "For us it's all about continuing to be positive, continuing to get healthy and focusing on the next step."
 
THE RUNDOWN
  • Elon got the lead first in the opening quarter pulling ahead 6-2 before Wingate went on a 5-0 to take the lead 7-6. Eventually, the Phoenix tied the game at 12-12 but the Bulldogs closed the quarter on a 14-4 to gain a 26-16 lead after the first 10 minutes of play. The Phoenix shot 40% (6-for-15) from the field going 2-for-3 (66.7%) from beyond the arc.
  • Wingate outscored Elon 22-9 in the second quarter to enter halftime with a 48-25 advantage over the Phoenix. Elon outnumbered the Bulldogs in points in the paint (14-10), fast break points (6-0) and offensive rebounds (8-5) in the first half.
  • The Phoenix outscored the Bulldogs 13-9 in the third quarter forcing six turnovers along with two blocks from Iycez Adams. However, Wingate maintained a 57-38 lead at the end of the third quarter.
  • Wingate struck first in the fourth quarter and maintained their lead throughout the rest of the game sealing a 72-53 victory.
NOTES 
  • Freshmen Ava Leroux and Maraja Pass made their first career starts. They were joined by Iycez Adams, Regina Walton and Ruby Willard.
  • Adams led the team with 13 points, three blocks and three steals. This is Adams' second time this season with double-figure points.
  • Diamond Monroe recorded a career-high 10 points and four boards. Pass also added 10 points and tied her career-high six rebounds. Regina Walton tied her career-high points with nine and added three boards as well.
  • Ava Leroux paced the Phoenix on the boards with a career-high eight rebounds followed by Adams with seven.
  • As a team, Elon outrebounded the Bulldogs on the offensive glass (15-12). The Phoenix also led in points in the paint (30-22), steals (7-3) and blocks (5-4). 
UP NEXT
  • The maroon and gold will hit the road on Dec. 10 to take on fellow Triad foe UNCG. Tipoff for the matchup is schedule for 2 p.m.
