Kaley Ehnow scored on a free position shot with 12 seconds remaining and freshman goalie
Caitlin Walsh made a career-high 13 saves as the Elon University lacrosse team went on the road to defeat Triad rival High Point 9-8 Wednesday evening. Elon improved to 4-5 with the win, while High Point dropped to 1-5 on the season.
Elon concluded non-conference play with the win and will be on the road at Monmouth Saturday at 11 a.m. to open CAA action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Elon trailed for less than four minutes during the game as the Phoenix jumped out to an early 2-0 lead behind goals from Kaley Ehnow and Anna Hackett.
- High Point tied the score at 2-2 by the end of the first period but Elon outscored the Panthers 3-1 in the second.
- Mikaela Buoscio and Camryn Levin recorded free position goals just 89 seconds apart and Hackett added her second goal of the game with just 50 seconds remaining in the second for a 5-3 halftime lead.
- Elon took its largest lead of the game early in the third quarter when Hackett completed the hat trick on an assist from Cierra Hopson. But High Point stormed back.
- The Panthers scored four unanswered goals in a 10-minute span to take their first lead of the game at 7-6.
- Sammy Fisher tied the game late in the third on a strong individual effort and heads-up play, wrapping around the net to pick up a loose ball and burying a shot 1-on-1 with the goalie.
- Both teams had chances early in the fourth but it took almost seven minutes for High Point to break the 7-7 tie on a goal from Mena Loescher.
- With the game teetering on the brink, Elon answered back with just 5:49 to play when Levin scored on her second free position goal of the game to tie the score.
- The Elon defense buckled down as the game went down to the wire, forcing a pair of turnovers, the last with 46 seconds to play.
- Elon transitioned to offense and Ehnow drew a foul for a free position chance with just 14 seconds remaining. Two seconds later, she beat the goalie to give Elon the 9-8 win.
NOTES AND STATS
- Freshman Anna Hackett recorded her sixth hat trick of the year and fourth in a row.
- Freshman Caitlin Walsh made a career-high 13 saves in the contest. Her previous high was seven against Old Dominion. Walsh added a team-best five ground balls.
- Elon has now played five one-goal games this year, including each of the team's last three victories, all of which came on the road. The Phoenix is 3-2 in one-goal games this year.
- The five one-goal games tie the program record for most such contests in a season, equaling the 2017 campaign.
- Freshman Jessie Penner had a team-high six draw controls and three caused turnovers. She has 17 draw controls over the past three games.
- Five of Elon's nine goals came on free position shots. The Phoenix was 5-of-9.
- Both teams had 27 shots and High Point held a 21-19 advantage in shots on goal.
- Elon was 21-of-23 on clear attempts and High Point was 17-of-22.
- Elon led on draw controls 11-10. The Phoenix has won the draw control battle in four of the past five games.
