Monmouth Edges Elon Lacrosse Late, 12-11

West Long Branch, N.J. – The Elon University lacrosse team (4-6, 0-1 CAA) played in its sixth one-goal game of the season Saturday, but Monmouth snapped the Phoenix's three-game win streak in such games, posting a 12-11 victory in the CAA opener for both teams. For Monmouth (7-4, 1-0 CAA), it was the program's first game as a member of the Colonial Athletic Association.

Elon led by as many as five goals in the second period, but Monmouth stormed back and scored the final two for the 12-11 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Elon scored the first four goals of the game. Anna Hackett opened the scoring and then Mikaela Buoscio added back-to-back goals to make it 3-0. Buoscio had just two goals on the season entering the game. Camryn Levin closed the early run by scoring with 1:43 remaining.
  • Monmouth scored just 11 seconds later but Cierra Hopson posted her 20th of the year with 59 seconds remaining to give Elon a 5-1 lead after one.
  • Kaley Ehnow pushed the lead to five with a goal early in the second but Monmouth struck back with two in a row.
  • Elon snatched back momentum as Hackett and Levin scored in succession for an 8-3 advantage.
  • Monmouth, though, posted three goals in the final 1:26 of the half, the last coming with only one second to play, to make it 8-6 at the break.
  • The momentum remained in Monmouth's corner to open the second half and the Hawks scored the first three of the third period to take their first lead of the game at 9-8.
  • Elon did tie the score at 9-9 as Sammy Fisher scored on a pass from Bridget Kelly to head into the fourth quarter deadlocked.
  • Hackett completed her hat trick with 12:32 remaining to give Elon a 10-9 lead but Monmouth scored four minutes later to tie it at 10-10.
  • Fisher scored just 36 seconds later and Elon led 11-10 with 5:47 to go. But Monmouth would tally goals just 26 seconds apart to take the 12-11 lead, which is how it would end.
