Men’s Tennis Looks For Bounce Back Against Delaware, William & Mary This Weekend

ELON, N.C. – After having its five-match winning streak ended last weekend, the Elon University men's tennis team (10-6) will look to rebound this week with contests against Colonial Athletic Association foes Delaware (11-4) on Thursday and William & Mary (6-9) on Saturday. 
 
COVERAGE 
  • Both matches will be played at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. Admission is free. 
  • Thursday's match against Delaware will start at 1 p.m. It will begin with doubles and conclude with singles shortly after.

SERIES HISTORY VS. DELAWARE, WILLIAM & MARY
  • Thursday will be the first ever meeting between the Phoenix and Blue Hens. 
  • Elon and William & Mary will face off for the 15th time on Saturday.
  • The Phoenix trails 8-6 in the all-time head-to-head against the Tribe.
  • Elon defeated William & Mary 4-2 in the most recent matchup between the teams on April 23, 2022, during the semifinals of the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament. The Phoenix upset the top-seeded Tribe to advance to the championship match. 
 
ABOUT THE PHOENIX
  • Elon is coming off a strong spring in which it went 15-9 and finished as the runner-up at the CAA Championship.
  • Among the returnees is Nicholas Campbell, the Most Outstanding Player at the CAA Tournament and an All-CAA second-team singles selection.
  • Others include senior Nicholas Condos; juniors Daniel Martin (All-CAA second team in singles and doubles), Luke Queiroz and Ben Zipay; and sophomore Esteban Penagos.
  • The Phoenix welcomes three freshmen in Oskar AntinheimoVeljko Krstic and Jake Pettingell. Antinheimo, from Helsinki, earned a UTR rating of 12 and has been ranked as high as No. 483 in the ITF Junior Rankings in singles play. A native of Belgrade, Serbia, Krstic has been ranked as high as No. 175 in the ITF Junior Rankings in both singles and doubles. Pettingell, from Sarasota, Fla., achieved a top USTA ranking of No. 22 in the state of Florida. Elon also adds Ahmed Hosni for the spring season. A native of Cairo, Egypt, Hosni has been ranked as high as No. 197 in the ITF Junior Rankings and reached two ITF Junior singles finals in 2022.  
  • Elon is led by head coach Michael Leonard, who is in his 19th season at the helm.

LAST TIME OUT
  • Elon fell to Presbyterian 4-2 on Sunday at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center in Greensboro, as its five-match winning streak came to an end. 
  • Elon won its sixth consecutive doubles point, extending its longest streak of the season. 
  • Nicholas Condos and Ben Zipay picked up a 6-1 victory on Court 3 for Elon's first win of the day. The duo is now 8-2 on the season. 
  • Presbyterian won at the No. 1 spot but Oskar Antinheimo and Veljko Krstic clinched doubles for the Phoenix with a 6-4 win at the No. 2 spot. The two freshmen have now won their last four matches together and are 4-1 on the season.
  • The Blue Hose tied the match at 1-1 with a win at No. 1 singles before Krstic won on Court 3 to put the Phoenix up 2-1. The freshman defeated Presbyterian's Sebastian Dominguez 6-4, 6-3. His 11 singles wins this season are tied with Daniel Martin for the most on the team. 
  • Presbyterian won the next three completed singles contests to clinch the match. Two of the wins came in deciding sets. 
  • The loss was Elon's first of the season in a home match though the Phoenix is still 7-0 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center this season. 

CAA WEEKLY RECOGNITION
  • Freshmen Oskar Antinheimo and Veljko Krstic were named CAA Doubles Team of the Week on Tuesday. 
  • The tandem went 3-0 at No. 2 doubles in Elon's matches against Dartmouth, Davidson and Presbyterian. 
  • After losing their first match together, the two freshmen have posted four consecutive victories and are 4-1 on the season. 
  • Antinheimo and Krstic clinched doubles for the Phoenix against Presbyterian with a 6-4 win. 

DOUBLES SUCCESS
  • The Phoenix has won the doubles point in six straight matches, its longest streak of the season. 
  • Three Elon doubles teams have combined to win four CAA weekly honors this season. 
  • Oskar Antinheimo and Veljko Krstic took home Doubles Team of the Week on Tuesday to become the third different Elon team to win the award.
  • Nicholas Condos and Ben Zipay have taken home Doubles Team of the Week on Feb. 8 and Feb. 21. The duo is 8-2 playing Nos. 2 and 3 doubles.
  • Daniel Martin and Oskar Antinhiemo also won Co-Doubles Team of the Week on Jan. 25
  • Antinheimo and Martin also cracked the ITA's Top 60 Doubles Rankings on Feb. 8, checking it at No. 55. They are the first Elon team to feature in the ranking since 2017.
  • The duo of Martin and Nicholas Campbell is 4-2 at the No. 1 spot in Elon's last six matches. Martin is 7-5 on the season at No. 1 with Antinheimo and Campbell. 

DAN THE MAN
  • Daniel Martin is tied with freshman Veljko Krstic for a team-high 11 singles wins this season, all of which have come at the No. 1 spot. He also has seven doubles victories.
  • Martin has won 28 singles matches since the start of last season, the most of any Elon player in that span. 
  • His win against Davidson on March 23 was his 11th at the No. 1 position since joining the Phoenix, as his previous 17 victories came in the Nos. 2, 3 and 5 spots.
  • The junior is 28-9 in his singles career at Elon, with 22 of the 28 victories coming in straight sets. 
  • After earning a singles victory in the No. 1 spot against No. 35 North Carolina State on Feb. 26, Daniel Martin was selected as the CAA's Player of the Week on Feb. 28. 
  • It was Martin's second CAA weekly honor of the season, as he also won Co-Doubles Team of the Week with partner Oskar Antinheimo on Jan. 25.

CAMPBELL FINDING HIS FORM
  • After losing his first two singles contests of the season, Nicholas Campbell has won 10 of his last 14 to improve his record to 10-6 on the season. 
  • Nine of Campbell's victories have come in the No. 2 spot with the other coming at No. 4. 
  • The senior, who finished last season on a five-match winning streak and won three matches in the CAA Championship, has won 15 of his last 21 completed singles bouts.
  • Campbell is also 6-6 on the season in doubles with partners Daniel Martin and Ahmed Hosni. Two of Campbell's victories with Hosni clinched the doubles point for Elon. 
 
VERSATILE ZIPAY
  • Junior Ben Zipay holds a 16-4 record across doubles and singles this season. 
  • Zipay is 8-2 in singles, with a 2-0 mark at No. 5 and a 6-2 record at No. 6.
  • Seven of Zipay's eight singles victories this season have come in straight sets. 
  • The Osprey, Florida, native is also 8-2 in doubles with partner Nicholas Condos. The tandem has been tabbed as the CAA's Doubles Team of the Week on two occasions. 
  • Zipay has the best winning percentage in both singles and doubles for anyone on the team that has made more than two appearances.   
 
KRSTIC ELEVATING
  • Freshman Veljko Krstic has won his last six singles matches and is now tied with Daniel Martin for a team-best 11 victories. 
  • All 11 of Krstic's singles wins this season have come at the No. 3 position. Five of his last six wins have come in straight sets. 
  • The Belgrade, Serbia, native is 3-0 in final sets this season. Two of the wins came in match tiebreaks while the other came in a full third set. 
  • Krstic is also 5-2 in doubles this season with three different partners. He is 4-1 with fellow freshman Oskar Antinheimo.
 
FRESHMAN PRODUCTION
  • Freshmen Oskar AntinheimoAhmed Hosni and Veljko Krstic have combined for 26 singles and 10 doubles wins this season. 
  • Of Elon's 39 victories in Nos. 3, 4, 5 and 6 singles this season, 26 were registered by freshmen. 26 of the Phoenix's 60 total singles wins have been delivered by freshmen. 
  • Antinheimo is 10-4 on the season playing Nos. 4, 5 and 6 singles, and his 10 singles victories this season are tied with Nicholas Campbell for the third most on the team. He has seven set wins in singles by 6-0 or 6-1 scores, one behind Daniel Martin for the most on the team. 
  • The Helsinki, Finland, native has already won three weekly CAA honors – CAA Co-Doubles Team of the Week on Jan. 25, CAA Player of the Week on Feb. 14 and CAA Doubles Team of the Week on Tuesday. 
  • Krstic has won nine of his last 10 matches in the No. 3 position and is 11-3 on the season. He won his first career CAA weekly honor on Tuesday. 

IT'S GOOD TO BE HOME
  • Elon is 7-0 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center this season. The Phoenix is 7-1 in home contests, with the one loss coming at Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center in Greensboro. 
  • Elon's win against Dartmouth on March 21 secured an 11th straight season with a winning home record. The last time the Phoenix did not finish with a winning home record was 2012. 
  • Since the start of the 2013 season, Elon is 95-22 in home matches. 
 
SCOUTING DELAWARE
  • The Blue Hens enter Thursday's matchup with an 11-4 record on the season. All four of the team's losses have come on the road.
  • Delaware is on a two-match losing streak and was defeated by UNCW 4-2 in its most recent appearance on Tuesday. 
  • In four matches against CAA opponents this season, the Blue Hens are 3-1. 
  • Delaware is led by head coach Pablo Montana who is in his second season with the program. 
 
SCOUTING WILLIAM & MARY
  • William & Mary is 6-9 on the season and 2-4 in road contests.
  • The Tribe enters on a four-match losing streak, with the team's last victory coming on March 13. 
  • In its most recent match against No. 73 Rice on Sunday, William & Mary fell 4-3 in Houston. 
  • Joseph Brailovsky and Sean Joseph are tied with a team-best seven singles wins on the season. The Tribe is below .500 in singles overall. 
  • The Tribe is 13-23 in completed doubles matches this season. George Davis and Bill Duo have a team-high four wins. 
  • William & Mary alum Jeff Kader is the head coach of the team, as he is in his eighth season with the program.
