Despite 24 From Evans, Elon Comeback Falls Short At Towson

Towson, Md. - The Elon University Women's Basketball team (9-20, 5-13 CAA) fell to the Towson Tigers (19-10, 13-5 CAA) Saturday afternoon 70-63 in the final game of the regular season for both teams.

Graduate guard Lenaejha Evans put on her best scoring performance as a Phoenix, pouring in 24 points. Kamryn Doty joined Evans in double figures with 12, one shy of her career high.

Patricia Anumgba led the way for the Tigers, scoring 21 points and shooting a blistering 5-of-7 from three including making all three of her attempts from three in the first half. Quinzia Fulmore joined in with 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, accomplishing her seventh double-double of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Kamryn Doty got the game going from the field, knocking down her first shot of the day on a long two-point field goal following a Towson turnover.
  • Evonna McGill would knock down a turnaround jumper for her first basket and give Elon its largest lead early with a 4-0 advantage.
  • Towson would answer back with a 7-0 run to take the lead on an Alexia Nelson triple.
  • The Tigers' top scorer Patricia Anumgba would cap off her first quarter by knocking down two straight triples on two possessions to give Towson a four-point lead after one quarter of play.
  • Evans and McGill began to trade buckets in the paint to begin the second quarter, but Towson's three-point shooting began to give the Tigers a growing lead.
  • Another three by Anumgba followed up by an Anissa Rivera triple would give Towson a nine-point lead.
  • The Tiger lead grew to as many as 17 before a Chloe Williams steal and fast break layup stopped the bleeding. Towson would go into the half up 42-24.
  • The two teams would trade baskets for the first five minutes of the half until a fast break jumper by Skye Williams gave the Tigers a 21-point lead, their largest of the afternoon.
  • Following the Williams jumper, the Phoenix trimmed the lead to 12 going into the fourth quarter following a deep three-point jumper by Williams as the buzzer sounded.
  • The fourth quarter belonged to the Phoenix following the Williams triple. Ajia James knocked down a three-point shot of her own, which cut the Tiger lead to nine.
  • The Phoenix and Tigers would trade buckets until a Kamryn Doty jump shot cut the lead to seven.
  • However, the Phoenix would never get any closer than seven, which turned out to be the final deficit, as Elon would fall to Towson, 70-63.

NOTES AND STATS
  • Lenaejha Evans had her best game offensively as a Phoenix, scoring 24 points on 9-of-21 from the field. Evans also finished a perfect 6-of-6 from the foul line. This is the most points in a game for Evans since she tallied a career-high 30 points against Niagara during her last season at Rider.
  • Kamryn Doty was impressive getting to the basket and shooting from the mid-range. Doty also finished a perfect 6-of-6 from the line. The redshirt freshman finished just one point short of tying her Elon personal best, which she achieved against Delaware in the Phoenix's first conference win of the season.
  • Freshman Chloe Williams led the Phoenix on the boards with seven and tallied seven points as well. The Wake Forest native was just one of two Phoenix to knock down a three-pointer.
  • Junior Ajia James continued her hot three-point shooting. James has now hit at least one three-pointer in nine of her last 10 games. She finished with three points and five boards against Towson.
  • Evonna McGill continued to be a presence inside, knocking down short jumpers and effectively using her hook shot. The Lowell, N.C. native finished with eight points as well as three steals.
  • Elon made a living in the passing lanes, combining for 10 steals as a unit, the most by the Phoenix since Elon collected 12 steals in the win over North Carolina A&T this season.
  • Freshman Ruby Willard finished with multiple career highs, recording her most minutes (11), rebounds (2) and steals (1) in a game.
  • Vanessa Taylor provided a spark off the bench, giving the Phoenix 24 minutes and drawing the assignment of Towson's most efficient scorer, Kylie Kornegay-Lucas.
  • Taylor and the Phoenix held Lucas, who came in averaging just under 15 points a game, to just four on 1-of-5 shooting from the field.
  • Elon was just as efficient from the free throw line, shooting 94% (15/16) from the charity stripe on Friday. This marks a Phoenix high in percentage on the season with at least 15 attempts and is the highest percentage with 15 attempts since the Phoenix shot 95% (20-21) against UNCW in 2019-20.
  • The Phoenix finished the regular-season 5-13 in the CAA, qualifying for the No. 11 seed in the CAA Tournament.

UP NEXT
