Hannah McCarthy had four goals and tied her career-high with six points, but the Elon lacrosse team (4-10, 0-5 CAA) dropped a game at home to visiting Hofstra (4-10, 1-4 CAA) 17-12 Saturday afternoon. Freshman
Caitlin Walsh had 11 saves in goal, her sixth consecutive game with at least nine.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Cierra Hopson scored twice in the first eight minutes of action for Elon, with Hannah McCarthy assisting on the first, to give Elon a 2-1 lead. After Hofstra scored a pair of goals to take its first lead of the game, Catherine Merritt tied the score at 3-3 with just 1:00 left to play in the first.
- Hofstra took a 4-3 lead into the second period on a goal with just 11 seconds remaining and then built a 5-3 lead in the first minute of the second.
- Elon answered back with three of the next four goals to tie the score at 6-6. Merritt scored her second, while McCarthy and Hopson scored just 27 seconds apart. McCarthy and Sammy Fisher assisted on the latter two goals.
- Hofstra, though, again scored late in the period to take a 7-6 lead into the break.
- The Pride outscored Elon 6-4 in the third to build a 13-10 lead heading into the fourth. Elon got a pair of third quarter goals from McCarthy, while Fisher and Anna Hackett each scored once.
- Hofstra put the game away with two goals in the first 2:02 of the fourth quarter for a 15-10 advantage. Elon tried to rally as McCarthy and Hopson scored 41 seconds apart but Hofstra answered back with the final two goals of the contest for the 17-12 win.
NOTES AND STATS
- Hannah McCarthy entered Saturday's game with seven points on the season before recording four goals and two assists. Her six points tied a career-high she set as a freshman when she had two goals and four assists at Delaware. She had five goals in a game a year ago against Campbell.
- Cierra Hopson also scored four goals, her sixth hat trick of the season.
- Sammy Fisher had a goal and two assists, her fifth three-point game of the year.
- Elon had a 15-10 edge on ground balls, led by three from goalie Caitlin Walsh.
- The Phoenix had just 10 turnovers, four fewer than Hofstra.
- Bridget Kelly had a team-best two caused turnovers.
- Julia Dalmass had a team-high with seven draw controls, her fourth game with at least seven this year. Sammy Fisher added four and now has a team-high 54 on the season, fifth-most in program history.
- Hofstra outshot Elon 33-26 and had five free-position shots compared to three for Elon. Hofstra converted on three as opposed to just one for the Phoenix.
