Elon, N.C. – Elon senior
Kaley Ehnow scored her fourth goal of the day with 29 seconds remaining to tie Saturday's women's lacrosse game against Delaware. But the Blue Hens scored 25 seconds later to come away with a 12-11 victory.
Ehnow's four goals and five points were both career highs, coming in the final home game of her career on Senior Day. Her last minute heroics, however, were negated as Elon played its school-record seventh one-goal game of the year.
Delaware improved to 7-7 overall and 3-3 with the win, while Elon fell to 4-11 overall and 0-6 in conference. Elon recognized nine seniors just prior to the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Elon rolled early, scoring the first four goals of the game. Cierra Hopson opened the scoring on an assist from Kaley Ehnow. That goal was followed by a pair of Sammy Fisher scores, followed by Ehnow's first goal of the game.
- Delaware answered back by scoring the final three goals of the first quarter to make it 4-3 after one.
- In the second quarter, Elon struck back with its own three-goal run. Fisher, Anna Hackett and Ehnow scored in just 76 seconds, with Ehnow's goal coming on an assist by Bridget Kelly.
- At that point, Elon led 7-3 but Delaware would once again rally. The Blue Hens scored the only two goals over the final 10:04 of the first half to get within two at 7-5.
- The game then faced a lightning delay that lasted nearly an hour before resuming to start the third quarter.
- The teams split the first four goals of the third quarter with Hackett scoring her second and Ehnow recording the hat trick as Elon held on to a 9-7 lead.
- Delaware finally tied the game for the first time with back-to-back goals but Catherine Merritt scored on a pass from Hannah McCarthy to give Elon a short-lived 10-9 lead.
- Delaware would score just 13 seconds later and the game went to the fourth tied at 10-10.
- The Blue Hens led for the first time on a goal with 13:27 remaining. The two teams then played a scoreless contest for nearly the next 13 minutes.
- With just 29 seconds to play, Ehnow knotted the score on a pass from Bridget Kelly. But Delaware won possession cleanly on the ensuing draw and the Blue Hens were able to score in front of net with only five seconds left.
