Women’s Golf Shoots Lowest Round Of Final Day To Finish Third At CAA Championship

SOUTHPORT, N.C. – The Elon University women's golf team shot the lowest score of the final round and tied the best round of the tournament on Sunday at the Colonial Athletic Association Championship to finish in third place. The tournament was contested at the par-72, 6,013-yard Reserve Club at St. James.

Elon posted a 4-over par 292 in the final round to pass UNC Wilmington for third place. The round matched College of Charleston's 292 in the second round for the lowest score in the tournament. The Phoenix finished the week with a 35-over 899. 
 
College of Charleston defended its team title as the Cougars won with a 16-over par 880. Delaware placed second with a 33-over 897.
 
Three Elon individuals finished in the top 10. With a fifth-place finish, Annabelle Ackroyd was named to the All-Tournament Team. College of Charleston's Emma Schimpf won the individual title with a 3-under par total of 213. She was the only player to finish the event under par. 
 
THE HIGHLIGHTS
  • Annabelle Ackroyd became the first Elon player to break par for the week as the senior carded a 2-under par 70 to shoot the lowest score in the field in the final round and vault 10 spots up the leaderboard into solo fifth place. She shot a 3-under 33 on her back nine that included no bogeys and three birdies, including one on the final hole. Ackroyd also made two birdies on the front nine. 
  • At 1-under par, Ackroyd was the only to player in the field to finish the tournament below par on par-3s. She made three birdies on par-3 holes, including two in the first round. Ackroyd also led Elon with eight birdies in the event and finished second among Phoenix players in par-4 scoring average (4.17). 
  • For the second straight year, Svarin Yuenyong earned a top-10 result at the CAA Championship, as the senior tied for sixth place. After making no birdies on Saturday, Yuenyong made three on her front nine to go out in 3-under 33. She made par on her final three holes and signed for a final-round 73.  
  • Yuenyong led the Phoenix for the tournament in pars (38) and par-5 scoring average (4.92). She also tied for fourth in the field in par-3 scoring average at 3.17. 
  • After a slow start, Lotte Fox heated up on the back nine to finish in a tie for eighth place. Fox made three birdies over a five-hole stretch to start her final nine, as she holed putts on holes 10, 12 and 14 and carded a 2-over par 74. The junior led the Phoenix in par-4 scoring average for the tournament (4.13) and made 36 pars, the fourth most in the field. 
  • Apple Ngamwong made two birdies in her final round on her way to shooting a 3-over par round of 75. She birdied the par-4 eighth hole on Sunday, which was one of just seven birdies on the hole all weekend. The junior tied for 13th place. 
  • Freshman Ashley Lafontaine returned to the lineup on Sunday for Annie Wu and posted a 5-over par 77, a three-shot improvement over her Friday score. She made three birdies on her front nine, including on both par-5s. 
  • Elon made 16 birdies on Sunday after making just 11 in the first two rounds combined.
  • As a team, the Phoenix finished second in pars (170) and par-3 scoring average (3.13). Elon also ranked third in par-4 scoring average (4.27) and fourth in both birdies (27) and par-5 scoring average (5.12).
  • The solo third place finish is Elon's best at the CAA Championship since the Phoenix placed second in its first appearance in 2015.
