Elon Splits Saturday Slate with Charleston

Charleston, S.C.- The Elon Phoenix (26-16, 14-8 CAA) mounted a furious comeback to complete game one of the series with the College of Charleston (27-15, 13-7 CAA), but fell in game two of the day.

In game one, the Friday night matchup was halted when a transformer blew in the area, causing the game to be suspended. Elon would enter the first game of Saturday trailing 2-1 but would use four runs in the top of the ninth to complete the comeback.

In game two, the Phoenix offense went silent against Trey Pooser and fell by the score of 12-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED

GAME ONE

  • The Phoenix got the bats going early against Ty Good with Luke Stephenson doubling in the first inning.
  • Elon would bring a run across in the top of the second following an RBI single from James Broderick. Elon would register three hits in the inning but leave three runners on base with just one run coming across.
  • Shea Sprague got off to a great start on the mound retiring the first six batters he faced. He retired nine of the first ten batters he faced to finish off Charleston the first time through the order.
  • Charleston would take the lead with one swing of the bat in the bottom of the fourth as Trotter Harlan hit a home run over the left field fence to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
  • Both offenses would register and hits, but no runs would come across to score from innings five through seven.
  • William Privette would enter the game for the Cougars looking to lock up his seventh save. Elon proved patient at the plate by drawing two walks off the CAA Preseason Pitcher of the Year. After Cole Reynolds was hit by a fastball, the Phoenix loaded the bases. Willie Havens pinch hit but struck out swinging to end the threat.
  • At the beginning of the bottom of the eighth, the lights went out inside the stadium. A power outage was confirmed following a blown transformer in the area. The game was suspended and was resumed at 2 p.m. the following day.
  • Following the resumption of play, Liam Dabagian got into a jam, but a fine defensive play by Connor Coolahan kept the Cougars scoreless in the bottom of the eighth.
  • The Phoenix offense would break through in the top of the ninth. Following back-to-back walks to Justin Cassella and Tanner Holliman, Kenny Mallory Jr. would execute a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners into scoring position.
  • Freshman Ryan Sprock delivered a two-out, two RBI single with the bases loaded to give the Phoenix the lead. Both Luke Stephenson and Cole Reynolds would add RBI singles to give Elon the insurance runs they needed to end game one of the series with a 5-3 victory.
GAME TWO
  • In game two, Charleston jumped on the Phoenix pitching staff from the beginning. Following a clean first frame from Justin Mitrovich, the Cougars struck first in the bottom of the second inning.
  • A Joseph Mershon RBI single opened the scoring, and the Cougars would score at least one run for the next five innings.
  • Charleston would add two more runs in the bottom of the third following an RBI double play then an RBI triple from Tyler Sorrentino.
  • The Cougars would add a run in both the fourth and fifth inning before claiming three runs in the bottom of the sixth to expand the lead to eight runs.
  • In the bottom of the eighth, Charleston would add four more runs to increase the lead to 12, which would be the final margin of victory for the College of Charleston in game two.
