Drexel Defeats Elon In Friday Matinee

Philadelphia, Pa. – The Drexel University lacrosse team (8-4, 2-2 CAA) used a six-goal run in the first half to pull away from Elon (4-9, 0-4 CAA) Friday in a 12-5 conference victory. Catherine Merritt scored a pair of goals for Elon and Caitlin Walsh made nine saves in goal.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Catherine Merritt scored twice in the first quarter but Drexel led 5-2 after one. Merritt's first goal tied the score at one, while her second came on a free-position shot late in the period.
  • Drexel shut out Elon in the second quarter to take a 9-2 advantage into halftime.
  • Hannah McCarthy and Sammy Fisher scored free position goals to open the third quarter, bringing Elon within five at 9-4.
  • Drexel scored the next three goals but Anna Hackett closed the third with a free position score to make it 12-5.
  • Neither team scored in the fourth quarter for the 12-5 final.
 
NOTES AND STATS
  • After going without a save in the first quarter, goalie Caitlin Walsh posted five in the second and finished with nine. It was her fifth consecutive game with at least nine saves.
  • Drexel outshot Elon 32-20 and 21-15 on goal. The Dragons also won 14-of-21 draws.
  • Elon was 4-of-5 on free-position attempts and a perfect 17-for-17 on clear attempts.  Elon also committed 14 turnovers, four fewer than Drexel.
  • Catherine Merritt's two goals give her 14 on the season. She came up just shy of her fourth hat trick of the season.
  • Kailee Follette and Walsh tied for team high honors with three ground balls.
  • Sammy Fisher had four of Elon's seven draw controls.
 
UP NEXT
  • Elon returns home for its final two home games of the year. The Phoenix will host Hofstra Saturday, April 15 at noon before hosting Delaware a week later at noon.
  • The Delaware game will serve as Elon's Senior Day.
