Seattle, W.A.- Elon junior
Ben Simon was selected by the New York Mets in the 2023 MLB Draft on Tuesday. The East Windsor, N.J., native was the 13
th round choice of the National League East club and the 396
th overall choice in this years' draft.
Simon finished his junior season with the Phoenix as one of the most accomplished relievers in the CAA. He finished tied for fourth in the CAA with seven saves while achieving a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 4:1. In over 25 innings pitched, he struck out 32 batters while walking just eight. Simon was a key figure out of the bullpen, helping lead the Phoenix to two, top ten finishes in strikeout-to-walk ratio and walks allowed per nine innings.
The right-hander secured saves in both of Elon's top 10 wins at Latham Park this past season. Four of Simon's seven saves would come against opponents that would make the NCAA Tournament: Kentucky, Northeastern, No.2 Wake Forest and No.9 Campbell. He concludes his Elon career with 56 appearances, 88.1 innings pitched, 9 saves and 103 strike outs.
Simon becomes the highest Elon pitcher selected in the MLB Draft since the trio of George Kirby (20), Kyle Brnovich (241) and Ty Adcock (246) were all chosen in the 2019 draft. All three of those players have reached Triple-A ball or higher with both Kirby and Adcock currently pitching for the Seattle Mariners.
