Lanier Flourishing In Freshman Season With Phoenix

ELON, N.C. – A native of nearby Chapel Hill, Cameron Lanier feels right at home with the Elon University volleyball team. The freshman right-side hitter took home CAA Rookie of the Week honors following the team's first conference matchups of the season.

"I definitely was not expecting it," Lanier said.

Through seven sets against the Hofstra Pride last weekend, Lanier racked up 25 kills, 18 digs, four blocks and four service aces. Lanier also posted the first double-double of her career in the maroon and gold with 13 kills and 14 digs during Elon's first match against Hofstra.

Most freshman seasons can be a rollercoaster for student-athletes, filled with moments of growth. While Lanier has had those, it has not stopped the freshman from continuing to stack great performances, as she currently leads the team in kills (94) and points (111.5).

"I did not expect to have this role at all. It's a whole new team," Lanier said. "I was coming in with no expectations other than just to learn and grow. If I didn't play, I didn't play, I'd get to watch players on the court and learn from them."

Lanier has enjoyed growing alongside her teammates, both underclassmen and veterans, and getting to experience the gameday atmosphere.

"The whole environment of Schar, the feeling of everything, then playing with everyone together, it's been super cool and really surreal," Lanier said.

Despite Lanier's phenomenal performance, the Phoenix lost both matches against the Pride to open up the team's conference schedule. Lanier said there is a lot to take away and it was beneficial to go against a formidable opponent.

"We didn't have the outcome we wanted, but I think it was really good for us to see what we need to work on, especially playing against a team as good as Hofstra," Lanier said.

With plenty of time left to grow on Elon's campus, Lanier has already started to establish herself on the Phoenix and in the conference as a formidable foe.

"I've just learned a lot," Lanier said. "As far as growing, we're working on what we have learned so far, and making that the best we can."
