Team Effort Sparks WBB Win Over Monmouth

WEST PALM BRANCH, N.J. A strong third quarter run for the Elon women's basketball team (6-12, 2-3) helped lift the Phoenix over Monmouth (9-6, 2-2) 65-60 on Saturday afternoon.

The Phoenix had four players reach double figures led by Vanessa Taylor who matched her career-high 17 points going 7-for-9 from the field including 2-for-2 from beyond the arc. Maraja Pass and Maya Johnson followed with 12 points apiece while Iycez Adams added 11.

"I am extremely happy for and proud of this team today," said head coach Charlotte Smith. "We have been very resilient over this entire trip and just mentally sharp in terms of making adjustments, so that's a sign of a very mature and professional basketball squad. I feel like we came out today and executed our defensive plan. We wanted to be disruptive defensively and take away their ball-screen offense. We did a good job overall defensively and it always helps when we shoot the ball well. Vanessa Taylor played with a lot of confidence and hit a big three-pointer down the stretch that gave us a lot of momentum. This game will definitely give us some confidence going into our next game on Sunday against Hofstra."

THE RUNDOWN
  • Both teams came out scoring in the opening quarter with the teams deadlocked at 8-8 midway through the first. Iycez Adams scored the first eight points for the Phoenix. Monmouth went on a 11-2 run to extend their lead to 19-10 before Elon closed the quarter with a four-point play from Maraja Pass but still trailed the Hawks 21-14.
  • The Phoenix struck first in the second quarter with a driving layup from Maraja Pass and jumper from Diamond Monroe to get within three at 21-18. Monmouth again put together a 10-3 run to increase the lead to ten with five minutes remaining in the half. Elon fought back with back-to-back baskets from Vanessa Taylor, including an and-one to get back within five. Monmouth controlled the remaining two minutes and entered halftime on top of the Phoenix 37-30.
  • The Hawks came out of the break on a 7-2 run pulling ahead 44-32. Elon quickly responded with a 15-2 run to gain their first lead of the game at 47-46. Adams would close the third quarter with a steal and a layup to hold a 49-46 Phoenix lead with 10 minutes left in the contest.
  • The maroon and gold kept the momentum in the fourth quarter outscoring Monmouth 16-14 to seal a 65-60 victory.
