ELON, N.C. – The Elon women's basketball team (4-10) fell in a tight battle to Towson (8-3) 58-53 on Friday night in Schar Center.
Iycez Adams led the Phoenix offense with 13 points going 6-for-12 from the field.
Maraja Pass along with Adams led the team on the boards with 8 rebounds each.
"Tonight was an exciting game. I feel like we had some really good runs and some great momentum from the bench," said head coach
Charlotte Smith. "It's a quick turnaround so we have to not look back with regret and look forward with hope and be prepared for Sunday. Overall, I am proud of our team effort tonight and we definitely can learn from this game in order to be better on Sunday."
THE RUNDOWN
- Elon struck first with a jumper from Iycez Adams. The Phoenix and the Tigers traded baskets throughout the first quarter recording five lead changes ultimately with Towson ending the quarter on top 14-10.
- A step-back jumper from Maya Johnson started the second quarter and got Elon within two at 14-12 before the Tigers went on a 9-2 run extending their lead to nine at 23-14. A second-chance layup from Jessica Booth sparked a 10-0 run for the Phoenix to give them a 24-23 advantage with just over two minutes led in the half. The Tigers would score another basket before a put-back layup from Hannah Dereje closed the half with Elon on top 26-25.
- The Phoenix kept the lead until Towson went on a 6-0 run midway through the third quarter to gain a 35-30 advantage. Elon fought back outscoring the Tigers 6-3 to end the quarter deadlocked 38-38.
- The battle continued into the fourth quarter with the teams going basket for basket. With the score at 43-43, a Maraja Pass and one gave Elon the three-point advantage. The Phoenix maintained that lead until Towson's Kylie Kornegay-Lucas hit back-to-back jumpers to give the momentum back to Towson. A Jessica Booth layup got Elon within one at 54-53 but Towson eventually sealed the win 58-53.

- The Phoenix fell to 5-5 all-time in CAA openers with the setback tonight against the Tigers.
- Iycez Adams, Jessica Booth, Maya Johnson, Maraja Pass and Vanessa Taylor started for the Phoenix.
- Adams led the Phoenix in scoring for the fourth time this season with 13 points, her seventh time this season in double-figures. The junior forward also tied her season-high in blocks with three.
- Pass followed with nine points, and both shared a team-high eight boards. Pass also added five assists.
- Elon outnumbered Towson in assists (14-3), blocks (4-3) and points in the paint (34-28).
