Angel Scores Career-High In Loss At Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, VA. — Freshman Jayda Angel notched her first career 20-point performance in the Elon women's basketball team's 87-69 loss to Virginia Tech on Saturday afternoon.

THE RUNDOWN
  • Virginia Tech opened the game with an 11-3 lead in the first quarter. Back-to-back buckets by Laila Anderson and Maraja Pass pulled Elon within four at 11-7. The Hokies extended their lead to 19-9 before free throws by Kierra Morrow and a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Jayda Angel trimmed the deficit to 19-13 at the end of the first quarter.
  • Elon stayed within striking distance early in the second quarter, trailing 23-17 with 8:24 left. Virginia Tech responded with a 9-2 run to go up 32-21. The Phoenix answered with a 10-4 run, cutting the lead to 36-31, but the Hokies closed the half on a 6-0 spurt to take a 42-31 lead into the break.
  • Virginia Tech outscored Elon 18-9 in the third quarter to build a 60-40 advantage. Angel sparked a 10-2 Phoenix run with eight points to bring the deficit down to 12 at 62-50. However, the Hokies ended the third quarter on a 7-1 run to go up 69-51.
  • The Hokies opened the fourth quarter on a 7-1 run, extending their lead to 76-52. Elon answered with a 6-0 run to narrow the gap to 76-58, but Virginia Tech pushed their advantage back to 21. Later, a jumper from Alyssa Ervin narrowed the gap to 83-66 with 1:29 left in regulation. Ashlee Shaw capped the scoring for Elon with three consecutive free throws in the final seconds, but the Phoenix ultimately fell 87-69.
NOTES
  • The Phoenix returned the same starters in Iycez Adams, Laila Anderson, Kamryn Doty, Maraja Pass and Raven Preston.
  • Jayda Angel led all scorers for the Phoenix with a career-high 20 points off the bench, shooting 7-for-13 from the field. She also tied for the team lead with six rebounds and two steals.
  • Preston tallied 14 points and six rebounds.
  • Maraja Pass paced the team with four assists, while Anderson knocked down a team-high four free throws.
  • Alyssa Ervin scored a career-best 10 points, shooting 3-for-6 from the field, and added a season-high five rebounds.
  • Ashlee Shaw recorded her first points as a Phoenix, going 3-for-3 from the free-throw line.
  • Elon outperformed Virginia Tech in steals (8-6) and bench points (40-27).
