Angel's Fourth Quarter Surge Pushes Phoenix Past Garnder-Webb

ELON, N.C. —  Jayda Angel delivered a team-high 17 points, including eight in the fourth quarter, to lead the Phoenix past Gardner-Webb on Friday night.
 
THE RUNDOWN
  • The Phoenix took an early 5-2 lead with buckets from Laila Anderson and Iycez Adams, but Gardner-Webb tied it up at 5-5. The teams traded baskets until Elon pulled ahead 16-11. Gardner-Webb closed the gap with a three-pointer, ending the first quarter with Elon up 16-14.
  • The second quarter saw the Bulldogs go on a 7-2 run, taking a 21-18 lead. The Phoenix answered with back-to-back and-ones from Ruby Willard and Kierra Morrow, plus a three from Regina Walton to go up 30-25. Gardner-Webb closed the quarter with an 8-2 run to lead 33-32 at halftime.
  • A quick three from Kamryn Doty put Elon back on top, but Gardner-Webb responded with a 7-0 run to go up 40-35. Elon battled back to even the score at 40-40 with 4:50 left in the quarter, thanks to a bucket from Jayda Angel and a transition and-one from Laila Anderson. Elon only allowed one more Bulldogs basket to lead 44-42 heading into the final 10 minutes.
  • Elon surged ahead with a 5-2 run to open the fourth, taking a 49-44 lead. Gardner-Webb fought back to tie it 54-54, but clutch threes from Angel and Anderson put the Phoenix up 60-56. Elon made five of its next six free-throws to go up 65- 56 with 1:05 remaining in the game. The Bulldogs made a quick three-pointer and a pair of free-throws but it was not enough as Elon secured the 69-61 victory.
NOTES
  • The Phoenix returned the same starters in Iycez Adams, Laila Anderson, Kamryn Doy Maraja Pass and Raven Preston.
  • Jayda Angel provided a spark off the bench, leading the team with 17 points, including a 3-for-7 performance from beyond the arc, while also contributing seven rebounds.
  • Anderson also reached double-figures with 11 points.
  • Preston again flirted with a double-double tallying 9 points and eight boards while also leading the Phoenix in steals (2) and assists (3).
  • Ten of the 11 Elon players that saw the court scored at least three points.  
  • As a team, Elon dominated the boards, outrebounding the Bulldogs 48-36 and grabbing 17 offensive rebounds.
UP NEXT
  • The Phoenix hit the road for the first time this season, traveling to face Marshall on Wednesday, November 13. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
