Elon Falls To No. 5 USC

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The Elon University women's basketball team fell, 88-30, on the road to No. 5 USC on Sunday.

THE RUNDOWN
  • Raven Preston put the Phoenix on the board with an early jumper, and a steal by Maraja Pass led to a Laila Anderson finish, tying the game at 4-4. USC responded with a 19-2 run to close the quarter, giving the Trojans a 23-6 advantage.
  • The Trojans started the second quarter on an 8-0 run, extending their lead to 31-8. The teams exchanged baskets, but consecutive scores from the Trojans closed the half with USC leading 40-12.
  • The teams went back and forth to start the third quarter, with the Trojans leading 51-21 with 5:47 remaining. USC held the Phoenix scoreless until Jayda Angel made a pull-up jumper with 49 seconds left in the quarter, as Elon trailed 69-23 heading into the final 10 minutes.
  • A pair of free throws from both Dereje and Samira Khalil brought Elon to 77-27 with 6:56 left in the game. The Trojans closed the game on an 11-3 run to seal an 88-30 win over Elon.
