Angel Calls Game: Phoenix Secure 68-67 Victory at Long Beach State

LONG BEACH, CALIF. — Jayda Angel sinks a second-chance bank jumper with two seconds remaining, lifting the Elon women's basketball team to a thrilling 68-67 victory over Long Beach State.

THE RUNDOWN
  • The Beach opened the game with a 7-0 run. Iycez Adams answered with back-to-back buckets to bring the Phoenix within three at 7-4, but Long Beach State responded with a 4-0 run to extend their lead. Later in the quarter, the Beach pushed their advantage to 11, leading 20-9, before Jayda Angel closed the quarter with a fadeaway jumper, leaving Elon trailing 20-11.
  • The Phoenix opened the second quarter with a 7-0 run, cutting the deficit to two at 20-18. Long Beach State responded to extend their lead back to nine at 27-18, but Elon battled back to trim the gap to two again at 27-25. The teams traded baskets before the Beach closed the half on a 7-2 run, leaving the Phoenix trailing 39-31 after an Ava Leroux free throw.
  • The teams traded buckets to start the third quarter before Laila Anderson scored eight straight points, followed by four consecutive free throws from Raven Preston, giving Elon a 45-43 lead. Another Anderson basket extended the Phoenix's advantage to 47-43, but back-to-back three-pointers from Long Beach State swung the lead back to the Beach at 49-47 with 5:13 left in the quarter. The teams continued to exchange baskets until Long Beach State pulled ahead 59-51. Elon closed the quarter with a 4-0 run, entering the final 10 minutes trailing 59-55.
  • A quick Long Beach State three-pointer pushed their lead to 62-55, but an 11-3 Phoenix run gave Elon a 66-65 edge with 3:49 remaining. The Beach regained the lead at 67-66 with two free throws at 1:26, but Jayda Angel's clutch second-chance jumper with two seconds left secured Elon's thrilling 68-67 victory.

  • Iycez Adams, Laila Anderson, Hannah Dereje, Maraja Pass, and Raven Preston started for the Phoenix.
  • Adams led the team with 13 points on 6-for-10 shooting while also pulling down nine rebounds.
  • Ava Leroux made her season debut, scoring 10 points on 4-for-6 shooting and adding two rebounds.
  • Anderson reached double figures with 12 points, including two three-pointers.
  • Preston tied her season-high with 14 rebounds to lead the team, while Kamryn Doty recorded a team-best three steals.
  • Pass dished out a team-high six assists, while Angel and Preston each added nine points.
