Women’s Basketball Shines In Nonconference Finale

ELON, N.C. — The Elon women's basketball team capped off its nonconference schedule with a dominant performance, securing a 97-58 victory over Lees-McRae at Schar Center.

THE RUNDOWN
  • The first quarter saw a back-and-forth battle, with Elon holding a narrow 6-5 lead at the 5:52 mark. After extending their lead to 10-5, the Phoenix saw Lees-McRae close the gap to 12-10 before finishing the quarter on a 7-0 run to take a 19-10 advantage.
  • Elon controlled the second quarter, holding the Bobcats to just seven points while expanding their lead to 44-17 at halftime.
  • Back-to-back buckets from Laila Anderson extended Elon's lead to 49-17 with 8:45 left in the third quarter. The Bobcats answered with three consecutive baskets, but the Phoenix countered with a 10-0 run to push their advantage to 60-23. Elon closed the quarter on an 8-4 spurt, taking a commanding 68-27 lead into the final frame.
  • Elon outscored Lees-McRae 7-5 in the first three minutes of the final quarter to extend their lead to 75-32. The Phoenix then increased their advantage to 49 points, leading 88-39. Both teams traded baskets to close out the game, with Elon securing a dominant 97-53 win over Lees-McRae.
NOTES
  • Elon returned the same starters in Iycez Adams, Laila Anderson, Hannah Dereje, Maraja Pass, and Raven Preston.
  • Preston led the team with 14 points and nine rebounds while also adding two steals and an assist.
  • Three additional Phoenix players reached double figures: Laila Anderson, Jayda Angel, and Kamryn Doty each contributed 11 points.
  • Angel led the team defensively with three steals, while Samira Khalil posted a season-high five assists.
  • Doty, Khalil, and Ashlee Shaw all recorded season-highs in points, with Shaw also grabbing a season-best five rebounds.
  • The Phoenix's offensive explosion marked the first time scoring 97 or more points since a 98-37 win over Winthrop on Nov. 19, 2017.
  • The Phoenix shot a season-best 42.9% (9-for-21) from beyond the arc and dominated the boards with a season-high 52 rebounds.
