Elon, N.C. – Elon University Football Head Coach
Tony Trisciani has announced the hiring of Doug Martin as the team's offensive coordinator. Martin has been the head coach at both Kent State and New Mexico State as well as serving as offensive coordinator at Boston College, New Mexico State, East Carolina and ETSU. He most recently served as the offensive coordinator for the UFL's Memphis Showboats and for the USFL's New Orleans Breakers.
In Martin's most recent college coaching tenure, he was the head coach at New Mexico State from 2013-21. In 2017, he lead the program to its first bowl game appearance in 57 years, defeating Utah State 26-20 in the Arizona Bowl. During his time at NMSU, wide receiver Jaleel Scott developed into a fourth round draft pick, quarterback Tyler Rogers ranked third nationally in passing yards and running back Larry Rose broke the school record for career rushing yards and career touchdowns.
Prior to taking over the reigns at NMSU, he spent the 2011 season with Aggies as offensive coordinator before moving on to Boston College for the same position in 2012. He helped the Eagles improve their total offense by 50 yards per game and the passing offense climbed to No. 44 nationally after ranking No. 100 the previous season. Quarterback Chase Rettig became just the fourth player in BC history to throw for 3,000 yards in a season and the only underclassmen to do so.
Martin was at Kent State from 2003-10, serving as head coach beginning in 2004. He helped develop players such as Josh Cribbs, Eugene Jarvis and Julian Edelman into some of the most potent offensive players in the country. Cribbs is the only player in NCAA history to lead his team in both rushing and passing in four different seasons, but became one of the most explosive kick returners in NFL history. Edelman was also a quarterback at Kent State and then had a 12-year career as a wide receiver with the New England Patriots, winning three Super Bowls and being named Super Bowl MVP following the 2018 season.
Before his time at Kent State, Martin spent more than a decade in North Carolina, serving as wide receivers coach and offensive coordinator at East Carolina. The team played in five bowl games during his time and he led the development of quarterback David Garrard into a fourth round draft pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars. A 2009 Pro Bowler, Garrard spent nine seasons with the Jaguars.
Martin was a graduate assistant at his alma mater, Kentucky, from 1986-87 before getting a job as the running backs coach at East Tennessee State in 1988. He was elevated to offensive coordinator from 1989-91.
Over the past two seasons, Martin has coached in the professional ranks, serving as offensive coordinator for the UFL's Memphis Showboats in 2024 and for the USFL's New Orleans Breakers in 2023. At New Orleans, one of his quarterbacks was former Elon signal-caller Davis Cheek.
Martin earned his degree from Kentucky in 1986, where he was a quarterback for coaches Fran Curci and Jerry Claiborne.
WHAT THEY ARE SAYING
"Elon is fortunate to have Coach Martin as their offensive coordinator. He will bring an exciting, high-powered offense to the program. The quarterbacks will really benefit from his coaching. He elevated my game to record-setting standards at Kent State, so get ready!" – Josh Cribbs, former Kent State quarterback
"As a player, Coach Martin taught me the values of playing the quarterback position that I needed going into the NFL. But the values he taught me about being a man, I've carried through life. My kids and the kids I've coached through the years have heard many of those same values that I learned over 25 years ago! Anyone being coached by Coach Martin will be a better quarterback and, more importantly, a better person." – David Garrard, former East Carolina quarterback
"Elon made a fantastic hire in Coach Martin. Not only is he one of the best people you will meet, but he has an adaptable and innovative offensive mind that has grown with the current state of football. Coach Martin's track record speaks for itself in his coaching proficiency. Most importantly, he has an uncanny ability to get the most out of his players by approaching them with humility and understanding. I am excited to see Coach Martin and Elon thrive in the coming years." – Davis Cheek, former Elon University and New Orleans Breakers (USFL) quarterback
"Without Coach Martin's belief in me, I would never have had the career I did at both Kent State and in the NFL with the Patriots. He trusted me to run his offense at Kent State and we had some great times doing things that people didn't think could be done. I am excited for the guys at Elon to experience the high-powered and exciting brand of football that coach is bringing to the Phoenix!" – Julian Edelman, Super Bowl LIII MVP
