Women’s Basketball Hosts Furman For Education Day

ELON, N.C. — The Elon women's basketball team (4-2) will host Furman (6-3) at Schar Center on Wednesday, December 4, for its annual Education Day matinee. Tipoff is set for 11 a.m.

THE SERIES   
  • Elon leads the all-time series over the Paladins 17-12.
  • The teams met last season where the Phoenix fell at Furman 73-47 on December 14, 2023.
LAST TIME OUT
  • Elon improved to 4-2 after a 74-67 road victory over Longwood.
  • Four Phoenix players scored in double figures, led by Raven Preston's third double-double of the season with 17 points, 13 rebounds, and two blocks.
  • Laila Anderson and Jayda Angel each recorded 12 points, marking their fourth double-digit scoring games of the season, while Iycez Adams added 10 points.
  • Maraja Pass tied her career high with eight assists and shared the team lead in steals (2) with Preston.
  • Hannah Dereje added a season-high eight points, and Kamryn Doty scored six, shooting 2-for-3 from three-point range.
  • The Phoenix outperformed the Lancers in defensive rebounds (31-28), points in the paint (48-36), and assists (16-10).
JAYDA'S ANGELS
  • Freshman Jayda Angel has earned two CAA Rookie of the Week honors to start the 2024-25 season.
  • Angel tallied 12 points shooting 4-for-9 from the field while also adding nine rebounds, two assists and a steal in the team's win over Longwood.
  • Angel notched her first career 20-point performance against Elon's first Power Four matchup of the season.
  • She led all Phoenix scorers with 20 points, shooting 7-for-13 from the field, and added six rebounds and two steals, tying for the team lead in both categories, during the game against Virginia Tech.
  • She made a strong impression in her first two collegiate games, leading the Phoenix in scoring in victories over High Point and Gardner-Webb.
  • Angel averaged 17.5 points in her first collegiate week.
  • She nearly reached a double-double against the Bulldogs with seven rebounds and 17 points.
PRESEASON PRAISE
  • The Phoenix was picked to finish seventh in the CAA Preseason Poll.
  • Senior forward Iycez Adams was selected to the Preseason All-CAA Second Team while redshirt sophomore guard Raven Preston earned Preseason All-CAA Honorable Mention honors.
  • Adams averaged a team-best 10.3 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game last season.
  • She tied for second in the league last season in blocks per game and was third in the conference in total blocked shots (49).
  • The Greensboro, N.C. native recorded five double-double performances last year, including three straight from Jan. 14-21, 2024. 
  • Raven Preston returns to play this season for the Phoenix after missing last season due to injury. Preston became the first CAA Rookie of the Year in Elon program history after averaging 11.2 points and 8.1 rebounds per game.
  • The two will play together for the Phoenix for the first time since playing with each other in 2020-21 at Quality Education Academy.
SCOUTING FURMAN
  • Furman is 6-3 after a 2-1 showing at the GSU Thanksgiving Tournament, where they fell to Campbell before defeating Georgia State and Purdue Fort Wayne.
  • The Paladins were picked to finish third in the 2024-25 SoCon Preseason Poll.
  • Furman led all conference teams with three All-SoCon Preseason Selections: Jada Session, Kate Johnson, and Tate Walters.
  • Johnson and Walters pace the Paladins' offense, each averaging 13.1 points per game.
  • Johnson also leads the team in rebounds per game (8.1) and blocks (12), while Walters boasts team highs in assists (34) and steals (18).
  • Head coach Pierre Curtis is in his second season at the helm of Furman's program.

  • The maroon and gold will travel to Greenville, N.C., on Sunday, December 8, to take on East Carolina. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
