WBB Falls Short At William & Mary Friday Night

WILLIAMSBURG, VA. -- The Elon University women's basketball team (9-18, 5-9) fell on the road at William & Mary (13-11, 9-4) 73-61 Friday night. 

Maya Johnson recorded her first double-double with a career-high 17 points and 10 rebounds. Johnson went 7-for-11 from the floor and 3-for-4 from the free-throw line. Three other Phoenix players put up double-figures with Diamond Monroe scoring 13 points points followed by Maraja Pass and Regina Walton with 11 points apiece. 

THE RUNDOWN
  • The Phoenix dominated the first quarter pulling ahead 15-4 midway through the frame. William & Mary would cut the lead to six at 17-11 before a three-pointer from Diamond Monroe ended the quarter with Elon leading 20-11.
  • The Tribe got on the board first with four quick points before three straight Phoenix baskets from Ajia James and Regina Walton extended Elon's lead back to double figures at 27-15. The teams traded baskets before the Tribe went on a 21-7 run to end the half on top 36-34. 
  • The teams went back-and-forth in the third quarter with Elon still trailing 44-42 with 5:26 left. William & Mary finished the quarter on a 7-4 run to enter the fourth quarter ahead 51-46. 
  • The Phoenix chipped away at the deficit with back-to-back buckets from Maya Johnson got Elon within six at 56-50. The Tribe went on a 14-6 run before five straight points from Walton got Elon back within single digits at 70-61. Unfortunately, the Phoenix could not overcome the deficit falling to William & Mary 73-61.
NOTES
  • Elon returned the same starters in Ajia James, Maya Johnson, Diamond Monroe, Vanessa Taylor and Regina Walton
  • Johnson recorded her first career double-double leading the Phoenix in both points with 17 and boards with 10.  
  • Monroe followed with 13 points while Maraja Pass and Walton both recorded 11 points. Walton also dished out a game-high four assists.
  • James grabbed nine boards while Hannah Dereje added four. 
  • In the first half, the Phoenix outnumbered the Tribe in rebounds (23-19), second chance points (10-0) and steals (4-2) while forcing 11 turnovers.

  • The maroon and gold host North Carolina A&T on Sunday, Feb. 25, in Schar Center at 2 p.m. for their Black History Month game.
