WBB Drops Sunday Contest To Campbell

ELON, N.C. — The Elon University women's basketball team (7-15, 3-6) fell to Campbell (11-9, 4-5) 53-35 on Sunday afternoon in Schar Center.

Iycez Adams led the Phoenix in scoring and rebounding for the second consecutive contest netting 13 points and grabbing eight boards. Maraja Pass and Ajia James followed, scoring eight points apiece. 

THE RUNDOWN
  • Each team was scoreless for the first four minutes of the contest, before Campbell got on the board first with a free-throw. The teams then traded baskets and were deadlocked at 6-6 before Campbell scored with eight seconds left to take a 8-6 lead to end the first.
  • The Phoenix came out on a 5-0 run to pull ahead 11-8 thanks to back-to-back Elon steals that resulted in a three-pointer from Ajia James and a layup from Iycez Adams. The Lady Camels would again tie the score at 13-13 before going on an 11-6 run extending their lead to 22-17 to enter halftime.
  • Elon outscored Campbell 9-6 in the first five minutes of the third quarter to get within two at 28-26. From there, the Lady Camels went on a 10-4 run to close the quarter up 38-30.
  • Campbell outscored the Phoenix 15-5 in the fourth quarter to seal a 53-35 victory. 
NOTES
  • Elon returned the same starters in Sunday afternoon's matchup in Iycez Adams, Jessica Booth, Maya Johnson, Maraja Pass and Vanessa Taylor.
  • For the 14th time this season, Adams led the Phoenix on the boards with eight rebounds. Adams scored a team-high 13 points followed by Pass and Ajia James with eight. 
  • James swiped a career-high four steals, followed by Adams with two. 
  • The maroon and gold forced 13 turnovers in the first half while adding six steals, three of which came from James.
  • Elon outnumbered the Lady Camels steals (9-4) while forcing 18 turnovers.  
UP NEXT
  • The Phoenix travels to Hampton, Va. on Friday, Feb. 9 to take on the Lady Pirates at 7 p.m. Following Friday's contest, the Phoenix welcome UNCW to Schar Center for their annual Play4Kay game. Tipoff for Sunday is slated for 1 p.m.
