Middle Inning Surge Secures Weekend Sweep Over Hofstra

Elon, N.C.- Ten runs combined in the fourth and fifth innings, propelled the Elon Phoenix (14-21, 4-8) to a sweep clinching victory over the Hofstra Pride (11-23, 3-9) Sunday afternoon. The Phoenix used a strong bullpen and strong base running to pull away with an 11-6 victory.

Vince Fattore returned to the lineup with a bang, launching a three-run home run in the fifth inning, capping off a five-run frame. Alex Duffey finished with a three-hit day of his own as the backstop finished with a full day behind the dish with three RBIs and two runs scored.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Ryan Sprock made another Sunday start for the Phoenix and got off to a quick start. Sprock retired the first three batters in the first, making quick work of the Pride offense.
  • The Phoenix offense used a pair of singles in the first inning to begin a threat. Connor Offshack was hit by a pitch, which left the door open for a big inning, but the Phoenix grounded into a double play and no runs scored in the first.
  • Sprock surrendered a bunt single in the second, then retired three straight once again to limit the Hofstra offense.
  • Elon would not have a base runner in the second or third innings, but Sprock continued to roll, retiring the side in order in the top of the fourth.
  • The Elon bats rose up in the bottom of the fourth. Elon struck first when Duffey laced a single into right field which was enough to score Shane Paradine from second base. Duffey would later come around to score on a wild pitch. Vince Fattore put up three runs on one swing with a home run to right center field putting Elon in front 5-0.
  • Hofstra got to Ryan Sprock in the fifth by scoring six runs and tallying six straight hits to pull ahead 6-5.
  • The Phoenix immediately took the lead back due to some heads-up base running. Following two reaching via a hit by pitch and a single, Offshack and Duffey both advanced on a wild pitch to advance 90 feet, then Offshack and Duffey both scored on a passed ball and wild pitch respectively. Kenny Mallory Jr. doubled down the left field line with two outs which brought another two runs home even with Mallory being thrown out at third to end the inning.
  • Sam Nomura sat down six straight six straight Hofstra batters after hitting a batter to open his relief appearance.
  • Christo Garrelts tossed a clean eighth inning before the Elon batters put up two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth thanks to an Alex Duffey single which was nearly a home run but brought back in the park by a fine defensive play from the Hofstra center fielder.
  • Christo Garrelts retired the Pride in order in the ninth to secure a sweep for the Phoenix and an 11-6 Sunday win.
