Elon Falls In Extra Innings To Monmouth

Elon, N.C.- Nine innings was not enough to decide Saturday night's CAA matchup between the Elon Phoenix (15-23, 5-9 CAA) and the Monmouth Hawks (11-22, 5-9 CAA). The Phoenix fell in 12 innings to Monmouth, 6-5.   
 
Justin Mitrovich put together his sixth quality start of the season, going six innings and allowing three earned runs. Shane Paradine and Ryan Sprock both homered in the loss with Sprock ending a 14-game homerless streak.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Monmouth got on the board first in the top half of the opening frame with the Hawks scoring on consecutive doubles to grab the lead.
  • Monmouth added another run in the top of the third on a fielder's choice.
  • Elon's offense struck hard in the bottom of the third inning. All with no outs, Elon struck for four runs. Vince Fattore led off the inning being hit by a pitch, then advanced to third on a Kenny Mallory Jr. double. Charlie Granatell brought home a run before Shane Paradine brought home three runs on a home run to left field.
  • The Hawks put another run on the board with a solo home run in the fifth.
  • The Phoenix got the run back with a solo home run from Ryan Sprock in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Monmouth grabbed a run in the seventh and eighth innings to tie the score at five.
  • The relievers went back and forth before Monmouth brought home a run on a squeeze play in the 12th inning. The Phoenix could not bring a run across in the bottom half of the frame and the game ended in favor of Monmouth, 6-5.
 
NOTES AND STATS
  • Justin Mitrovich put together the sixth quality start of his sophomore season, going six innings allowing three earned runs and striking out seven.
  • Liam Dabagian put together another strong relief appearance with a clean inning.
  • Christo Garrelts went three innings out of the bullpen handling the ninth, 10th and 11 innings.
  • Charlie Granatell put together a three-hit performance, as he finished 3-for-6 at the plate with a run scored.
  • Shane Paradine hit his third home run of the season with a three-run blast in the third inning.
  • Ryan Sprock finished 1-for-3 at the plate, reaching base three times and homering in the bottom of the sixth inning. The home run was his fifth of the season.
  • Kenny Mallory Jr. collected the seventh multi-hit game in CAA play of his season. The junior from Lawrenceville, Ga. reached base four times Saturday night.
  • Alex Duffey extended his hitting streak to six games with a double off the left field wall in the eighth inning.
  • Elon leads the all-time series with Monmouth, 4-1.
 
UP NEXT
  • The Phoenix will return to Latham Park tomorrow morning for another matchup with Monmouth. First pitch against the Hawks is at 9:30 am.
