Elon Powers Four Homers In Win Over Monmouth

Elon, N.C.- For the second time in his career, Charlie Granatell homered twice in a game which helped lift the Elon Phoenix (16-23, 6-9 CAA) to a series clinching victory over the Monmouth Hawks (11-23, 5-10 CAA). James Broderick and Shane Paradine also homered in the 9-7 win.

Liam Dabagian got the win for his two innings of relief in a no run effort out of the bullpen to help close out the Hawk offense. Tate Ostrowski fired another clean inning of relief before Ben Sieracki earned his third save of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • For the second day in a row, the Hawks struck first in the opening frame with two runs off Ryan Sprock.
  • Monmouth struck for two more runs in the top of the second to grab a 4-0 lead.
  • The Phoenix bats struck for six runs in the bottom of the second to grab the lead and the momentum. Elon used a pair of three runs home runs, first from James Broderick batting eighth in the order, then from Charlie Granatell to give the Phoenix a 6-4 lead.
  • Ryan Sprock settled in during the third and fourth innings with two clean frames to hold the Phoenix lead.
  • Elon put up three more runs in the fourth to make it nine unanswered runs after falling behind 4-0 in the second inning. The Phoenix went back-to-back after Kenny Mallory Jr. brought in a run on a groundout. Charlie Granatell put another one over the left field wall driving a fastball into the trees to give Elon a four-run lead. To not be outdone, Shane Paradine homered for the second time on the weekend and gave the Phoenix a five-run lead.
  • Monmouth answered with three runs in the top of the fifth before Justin Szestowicki came out of the bullpen and answered by leaving the bases loaded on a punchout to end the frame.
  • The bullpens began to take control in the Elon half of the fifth with no runs being scored over the next five half-innings.
  • Tate Ostrowski came in for the Phoenix to toss the eighth and struck out Phil Stahl to end the inning and end his perfect day at the plate.
  • Ben Sieracki came in for the save and sat down the bottom third of the order to finish off a 9-7 Elon win.
