Elon, N.C. –
Jette Beermann earned her second gold medal of the weekend and
Piper Jons had a record-shattering performance in the 400 as the Elon University track & field team placed second at the CAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Northeastern won the CAA title with 128.5 points, followed by Elon with 111 and Hampton with 105.
Beermann won the 5,000 in dramatic fashion, edging out Hampton's Peninah Mutisya at the line to win by just .1 second. That gave her two victories in two days after winning the CAA Championship in the 10,000 Friday.
Jons blazed to the CAA title in the 400 with a school record time of 53.10 seconds. That time broke a school record that had stood since 2014 by almost a full second. Those gold medal efforts were just two of the team's five podium performances on Championship Saturday.
ON THE PODIUM
- Jette Beermann's time of 16:12.98 in the 5,000 wasn't her fastest – she ran 30 seconds faster in late April to win the Penn Relays – but it was her grit and determination down the stretch that made for a memorable finish. She stayed in the lead pack throughout the race and chased Hampton's Peninah Mutisya over the final 100 meters, catching her in the last stride before the finish line.
- Piper Jons ran the 400 in 53.10 seconds to earn the CAA Championship. That time was more than a second faster than her season best time of 54.26 seconds and well ahead of her previous personal best time of 54.02 seconds. Bria Bell's school record time of 53.95 seconds had stood since 2014.
- Kaitlin McGoogan had a strong day in the discus to win the bronze medal, especially once she entered finals. Her first throw of finals was a new personal best mark of 168-feet-4.75 (51.33m) and vaulted her into third place. That distance is second in program history as well. Although that distance held up as her best of the day, both her fifth and sixth throws would have been season bests coming into the weekend.
- Anna Twomey made one trip to the podium stand and almost had a second. In the 1500, she placed third overall with a time of 4:28.04 to lead a trio of runners in the top six of the final standings. She also finished fourth in the 800, posting the second-fastest time in school history at that distance in 2:09.29.
- Elon's 400 relay team of Meghan Wilcox, Jazlyn Jefferson, Jons and Isabella Hildtich took their spot on the medal stand by placing third with a time of 45.95 seconds. The quartet ran their fastest time of the season and the third-fastest time in program history.
OTHER NOTEWORTHY PERFORMANCES
- Hannah Schonhoff set a new personal best in the high jump, clearing 5-feet-8 (1.73m). That mark is second in school history and gave her a fourth-place finish.
- Following Twomey's third place finish in the 1,500, teammates Abby Beville (4:33.16) and Sarah Petitjean (4:34.25) placed fourth and sixth, respectively.
- While Jette Beermann's race in the 5,000 was spectacular, Maggie Springer and Katie Blount also scored points for the Phoenix in the event. Springer finished fifth in 16:41.59 and Blount was eighth in 16:47.89.
- In the shot put, Lauryn Carlton ended four spots higher than her entry seed, placing fifth with a throw of 44-10 (13.67m).
- Piper Jons scored in a third event on the day, finishing seventh in the 200 with a time of 24.13 seconds.
- In the triple jump, Linn Hertz Saebboe placed seventh with a jump of 39-5.5 (12.03m). That was just four centimeters shy of her season best.
- Isabella Hildtich gave the Phoenix a point in the 100 hurdles with an eighth place finish in 14.41 seconds.
UP NEXT
- Elon is scheduled to compete at High Point's Dani Palooza Last Chance Meet Sunday.
- The NCAA will announce qualifiers for the East and West regionals Thursday. The NCAA East Region Preliminary Round will take place May 22-25 in Lexington, Ky.
- While final qualifiers are yet to be announced, Elon could qualify a quartet of student-athletes to regionals, including Jette Beermann (5,000), Hannah Miller (steeplechase), Piper Jons (400) and Kaitlin McGoogan (discus).
