Second Half Shooting Sees Elon Soar Past Stony Brook

Box Score ELON, N.C. — The Elon women's basketball team (9-6, 3-1 CAA) delivered their best shooting performance of the season in a half, hitting 61.2 percent from the field in the second half to secure a 60-48 victory over Stony Brook (8-8, 3-2).

THE RUNDOWN
  • Raven Preston opened the scoring for the Phoenix, followed by two free throws from Ava Leroux to give Elon an early 4-0 lead. The Phoenix held Stony Brook scoreless until the 5:22 mark of the first quarter, but back-to-back Seawolves baskets put them ahead 5-4. The teams traded baskets down the stretch, with Stony Brook ending the quarter with an 8-6 advantage.
  • Stony Brook opened the second quarter with a 7-3 run, extending their lead to six points at 15-9. Jayda Angel's and-one brought the Phoenix back within three at 15-12, but the Seawolves responded with an 8-0 run to push their lead to 23-12. Kamryn Doty hit a free throw, leaving Elon trailing 23-13 at halftime.
  • The teams traded baskets to open the third quarter, with back-to-back scores bringing the Phoenix within eight at 29-21. The Seawolves responded with a bucket, but a three-pointer by Kamryn Doty, followed by a steal and layup from Laila Anderson, narrowed the gap to 31-26. Elon then went on a 6-1 run to tie the game at 32-32. Stony Brook regained a two-point lead at 34-32, but consecutive scores gave Elon their first lead of the second half at 36-34. The Seawolves edged ahead 38-36 with 1:14 remaining in the quarter, but a free throw from Iycez Adams and a late layup from Raven Preston put Elon up 39-38 heading into the final frame.
  • The Phoenix opened the fourth quarter with a 7-0 run, extending their lead to eight at 46-38. Stony Brook narrowed the gap to six at 48-42, but Elon answered with an 8-0 run to push their advantage to double digits at 56-42. The Seawolves fought back to get within 10 at 58-48, but the deficit proved insurmountable as the Phoenix sealed a 60-48 victory.

  • Ava Leroux joined the starting lineup alongside Iycez Adams, Laila Anderson, Maraja Pass, and Raven Preston.
  • Adams led the team with a season-high 17 points, shooting 7-for-10 from the field, while adding eight rebounds and a steal.
  • Jayda Angel matched her season-high with nine rebounds and contributed three steals.
  • Anderson (12) and Preston (10) also scored in double figures.
  • Pass dished out a team-high four assists, with Angel and Preston each adding three.
  • The Phoenix outperformed the Seawolves in rebounds (38-33), points off turnovers (23-6), steals (8-6), and assists (10-8).
  • Elon shot a season-best 61.2 percent from the field in the second half.
  • The Phoenix last started 3-1 in CAA play during the 2019-20 season.
