Women’s Basketball Pulls Out 69-67 Victory At Delaware

NEWARK, DEL. — The Elon women's basketball team (11-6, 5-1 CAA) secured a 69-67 victory over Delaware (4-12, 1-5 CAA) in a tightly contested second half on Friday night.

THE RUNDOWN
  • The teams traded baskets to start the first quarter until Delaware hit back-to-back three-pointers to take an 11-6 lead. A jumper by Iycez Adams and a three-pointer from Kamryn Doty tied the game at 11-11. Ruby Willard later sank another three-pointer to put Elon ahead 16-12 with 2:17 remaining in the quarter. The Blue Hens cut the deficit to two at 16-14, but consecutive baskets by the Phoenix secured a 20-14 lead after the first quarter.
  • Elon opened the second quarter with a dominant 13-6 run to extend their lead to double digits at 33-20 with 4:49 remaining in the half. A subsequent 8-0 run gave the Phoenix a commanding 41-24 advantage. Both teams exchanged baskets to close the half, with Elon in control, leading 43-26.
  • The Blue Hens opened the third quarter on a 7-0 run, cutting Elon's lead to 43-33. The teams traded baskets before back-to-back three-pointers extended the Phoenix's lead to 57-41. Delaware responded, narrowing the margin to 10 at 57-47, but a jumper by Raven Preston gave Elon a 59-47 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
  • The Phoenix surged ahead 63-47 with 8:13 left in the game, but Delaware answered with a 12-2 run to close the gap to six at 65-59. The teams traded scores until back-to-back three-pointers by the Blue Hens pulled them within one at 68-67 with 18 seconds remaining. Doty secured a crucial free throw for the Phoenix, sealing a 69-67 victory over Delaware.

  • Elon returned the same starting lineup of Iycez Adams, Laila Anderson, Ava Leroux, Maraja Pass, and Raven Preston.
  • Jayda Angel led the Phoenix in scoring for the fifth time this season with 14 points, while Preston (13) and Anderson (11) also reached double figures.
  • Adams and Preston each grabbed a team-high five rebounds.
  • Pass recorded a career-high four steals, and Angel matched her season-high with four assists to lead the team.
  • Elon shot a season-best 57.6% (19-for-33) from the field in the first half.
  • The maroon and gold outperformed Delaware in fast-break points (14-5) and steals (10-8).
  • Elon's 5-1 start in CAA play marks their best conference start since 2016-17.
