Women’s Basketball Falls At Drexel Sunday

PHILADELPHIA, PA. — The Elon women's basketball team (11-7, 5-2 CAA) faced a tough road test, falling to Drexel (9-8, 5-2 CAA) on Sunday afternoon.

THE RUNDOWN
  • Back-to-back three-pointers from Laila Anderson and Raven Preston gave Elon a 6-4 lead with 7:45 left in the first quarter. Drexel responded with a 12-0 run to end the period ahead 16-6.
  • The Dragons extended their momentum in the second quarter, outscoring the Phoenix 18-7 to take a 34-13 lead into halftime.
  • The teams exchanged baskets in the third quarter, with Elon narrowing the gap to 44-22 following a step-back jumper by Jayda Angel with 3:55 remaining in the period. A late Drexel three-pointer extended their lead to 48-22 heading into the final quarter.
  • Elon opened the fourth quarter on a 7-2 run to cut their deficit to 50-29 with 7:07 remaining in the game. The teams traded baskets before a 5-0 Phoenix run saw the Phoenix within 19 at 55-34. The deficit was too much to overcome as Elon fell 64-37 to the Dragons. 
NOTES
  • Ruby Willard earned her first start of the season, joining Iycez Adams, Laila Anderson, Maraja Pass, and Raven Preston in the starting lineup.
  • Jayda Angel and Kierra Morrow tied for the team lead with nine points each, with Morrow setting a season-high by shooting 2-for-2 from the field and 5-for-6 from the free-throw line.
  • Angel and Adams led the team with five rebounds apiece, while Angel, Preston, and Alyssa Ervin each contributed two steals.
  • The Phoenix dominated the boards, outrebounding Drexel 40-32, including a significant 21-7 advantage on offensive rebounds.
UP NEXT
  • The maroon and gold will host William & Mary on Friday, Jan. 31, at 7 p.m., followed by a matchup against Monmouth on Sunday, Feb. 2, at 1 p.m. to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
