Late Surge Prevails Elon Past William & Mary In Overtime

WILLIAMSBURG, VA. — A strong late-game push and clutch overtime performance lifted Elon (7-6, 1-1 CAA) to a 70-66 victory over William & Mary (4-9, 1-1 CAA) on Sunday.

THE RUNDOWN
  • Hannah Dereje opened the scoring with a layup for Elon, but William & Mary responded to take a 7-4 lead. The teams traded baskets before a late Regina Walton driving layup left the Phoenix trailing 12-10 at the end of the first quarter.
  • William & Mary started the second quarter with a 6-3 run, extending their lead to 18-13 with 8:05 remaining in the half. Ashlee Shaw narrowed the gap to three at 18-15, but the Tribe answered with a three-pointer to push their advantage to 21-15. Back-to-back jumpers from the Phoenix brought them within two at 21-19, but a 4-0 Tribe run extended the lead to 25-19. A 7-0 run by Elon gave them their first lead at 26-25, and after trading buckets, the Phoenix held a 28-27 advantage at halftime.
  • The Tribe outscored the Phoenix 19-8 in the third quarter to take a 10-point lead at 46-36 heading into the final quarter.
  • Elon opened the fourth quarter with an 8-4 run, cutting the Tribe's lead to six at 50-44 and forcing a William & Mary timeout. The Tribe responded quickly with two baskets, extending their lead back to 11 at 55-44. Elon answered with three consecutive baskets and a Laila Anderson free throw, narrowing the deficit to four at 55-51. Back-to-back buckets from Iycez Adams and Anderson tied the game at 55-55 with 1:31 remaining. After the Tribe converted two free throws, a jumper from Raven Preston sent the game into overtime tied at 57-57.
  • In overtime, the Tribe struck first with two free throws, but an Anderson three-pointer and five consecutive points from Preston gave Elon a 65-59 lead with 2:30 left. William & Mary trimmed the deficit to two at 65-63, but Elon responded with a five-point cushion at 68-63. The Tribe hit a three-pointer with seven seconds remaining to make it 68-66, but Anderson sealed the 70-66 victory for Elon with two clutch free throws.
NOTES
  • Elon returned the same starters in Iycez Adams, Laila Anderson, Hannah Dereje, Maraja Pass, and Raven Preston.
  • Preston notched her fourth double-double of the season, leading the Phoenix with 16 points and 15 rebounds.
  • Adams also recorded a double-double, contributing 12 points and a season-high 13 rebounds.
  • Angel reached double figures with 14 points on 7-for-11 shooting while also adding seven rebounds and two steals.
  • Anderson tallied her eighth double-digit scoring game of the season with 12 points.
  • Adams led the team defensively with two blocks, while Angel and Preston shared the team lead with four assists each.
