Elon, Campbell Set For First-Place Battle

ELON – The Elon University men's soccer team (6-2-6, 3-0-3 CAA) will battle Campbell (8-4-4, 3-1-2 CAA) for first place in the CAA South Division on Saturday night, as the top two teams in the division square off in Buies Creek.

The Campbell Series 
  • Saturday will be the 26th all-time meeting between the Phoenix and Fighting Camels and the second this season.  
  • Elon holds a 13-10-2 edge in the series. The Phoenix is 3-0-1 in the last four encounters between the teams.  
  • Elon and Campbell played to a scoreless draw at Rudd Field on Sept. 26.  
  • The Phoenix is unbeaten in three matches against Campbell since the Camels joined the CAA in 2023.  
  • Last season, Elon defeated Campbell, 2-1, in Buies Creek in its regular season finale to clinch the CAA regular season title.  
  • Campbell holds a slight 4-3 edge against Elon in matches played in Buies Creek, but the Phoenix has won three of its last four trips there.  
  • The Phoenix is 7-1-1 in its last nine matchups against the Camels, with the lone Campbell triumph coming in the spring 2021 campaign.  
 
Campbell Rematch 
  • Elon and Campbell battled to a scoreless draw at Rudd in their first meeting this season on Sept. 26.  
  • The match featured just six total shot attempts, with Campbell holding a slight 4-2 advantage.  
  • Jackson Leavitt made a pair of saves in goal for his sixth clean sheet of the season.  
  • The match featured six yellow cards, with each team picking up three. Campbell outpaced Elon in fouls, 14-7. 
  • Six Elon players logged the full 90 minutes – Carlos LevyMajaliwa Msabaha, Connor Mucchetti, Weston JonkeCharlie Kitch and Sumner Nenninger. 
 
Last Time Out 
  • Elon picked up a point Saturday in a 0-0 tie at College of Charleston, securing a CAA Tournament spot with the result.  
  • Leavitt anchored Elon's ninth clean sheet of the campaign with three saves in goal.  
  • It was Elon's fourth scoreless tie of the season. The Phoenix finished with a slight 10-8 edge in shots over the Cougars. Five of Elon's 10 shots came in the final 15 minutes of the match. Alex Wharton attempted a team-high three shots on the day in 32 minutes off the bench. It was the most shots he has taken in a match this season. 
  • Five Phoenix field players went the full distance – Levy, Mucchetti, Jonke, Kitch and Martin Kozak. 
  • The match featured 26 combined fouls, with Charleston committing 17
 
CAA Success 
  • Elon currently sits atop the CAA South Division with 12 points after going 3-0-3 in in its first six conference clashes. The Phoenix is one point ahead of second-place Campbell.  
  • Elon can clinch the CAA South Division title and the division's No. 1 seed in the CAA Tournament on Saturday night with a victory against the Camels.  
  • The Phoenix is three points clear of UNCW, who sits alone in third place in the standings.  
  • Elon has earned a win or tie against the other four South Division teams. The Phoenix has already played UNCW (2-0-0) and Charleston (1-0-1) two times on the season.  
  • The Phoenix is unbeaten in its last eight regular season conference matches.  
  • Elon's final two games are against CAA South opponents, both of which are regular season rematches.   
 
Top Drawer Recognition 
  • Last week, Msabaha and Leavitt earned spots on Top Drawer Soccer's Midseason Watchlist.  
  • Msabaha checked in at No. 33 with Leavitt ranked No. 39. They were the two highest ranked players from the CAA in the ranking and two of just three overall from the conference, along with Hofstra's Laurie Goddard.  
  • Msabaha has played all but 13 of a possible 1,260 minutes in 14 matches for the Phoenix this season, the most minutes by an Elon field player. The senior defender and preseason All-CAA selection has helped Elon to nine clean sheets on the season. 
  • Leavitt has started every match in goal for the Phoenix this season and ranks No. 4 nationally in goals against average (.357). The graduate student has 37 saves on the campaign to backstop the CAA's top scoring defense. 
 
Defense, Defense, Defense 
  • Elon has allowed just five goals through its first 14 matches. The Phoenix has posted nine clean sheets on the season, including a stretch of four in a row that came to an end on Sept. 20 at William & Mary.  
  • Elon ranks No. 5 in the country in shutout percentage (0.643). The Phoenix has posted shutouts in four of its six conference matches, including each of the last three.  
  • The Phoenix leads the CAA and is No. 4 nationally in goals against average (0.357). Elon has allowed seven fewer goals than the next best CAA team.  
  • Leavitt has played every minute in goal this season for the Phoenix. He has made 37 saves and ranks No.  5 nationally in save percentage (.881) as well as No. 4 in goals against average (.357). 
  • The Phoenix has yet to allow a goal in seven matches at Rudd this season, with seven of the team's nine seven clean sheets coming at home.  
  • Msabaha has logged a team-best 1,247 minutes on Elon's back line this season. Mucchetti (1,171), Jonke (1,160), Levy (1,073) and Kozak (1,066) have also surpassed 1,000 minutes on the season.  
  • Elon has allowed just four of its first 14 opponents to reach double digit shot attempts in a game.  
  • On Oct. 13, Kitch earned CAA Defensive Player of the Week, becoming the second Elon player to earn the honor this season along with Leavitt. Kitch scored the game-winning goal for Elon against UNCW on Oct. 11 after logging the full 90 minutes in a 1-1 draw at No. 7 Duke on Oct. 7.  
 
Renz The Rookie 
  • Dominik Renz has emerged as one of Elon's top offensive producers in his debut campaign with the Phoenix. 
  • The redshirt sophomore is second on the team lead with seven points (3g, 1a) and had a four-game point streak earlier this season.  
  • All three of Renz's goals this season have been game-winning tallies, including two against CAA opponents UNCW and College of Charleston. He ranks No. 2 in the conference in game-winning goals, trailing only Hofstra's Goddard (5).  
  • Renz took home back-to-back CAA Rookie of the Week honors on Sept. 1 and Sept. 8, becoming the first Elon player to win the weekly honor twice in a season since Scott Vatne in 2021.  
  • Renz has made 10 consecutive starts for the Phoenix and has played 65-plus minutes in 10 of the last 12 matches.  
 
Kozak Contributing  
  • Kozak is pacing the Phoenix with eight points this season (2g, 4a). He has contributed to three of Elon's last five goals.   
  • Kozak leads the Phoenix with four assists through the first 14 games this season, all of which he has started. 
  • The junior has the most points for the Phoenix in CAA play (5).   
  • Kozak is one of three Elon players, along with Mucchetti and Colin Veltri, with multiple assists on the season and has contributed on six of Elon's 11 goals as a team.  
  • Kozak is tied for the eighth most assists among CAA players this season.  
 
Defending Regular Season Champs 
  • Elon is coming off its second regular season CAA title in the last three seasons after topping the league table in 2024 with a 6-2 conference mark. 
  • Needing a victory in the regular season finale against Campbell to clinch the regular season crown, Elon came away with a 2-1 road victory behind goals from Scott Vatne and Mucchetti.  
  • The Phoenix finished last season with a 10-7-1 overall record. As the top seed in the CAA Championship, Elon hosted a semifinal match against No. 4 seeded Hofstra, losing 2-0 to the eventual conference champions.  
  • Elon went its first eight matches without a defeat and rose to as high as No. 10 in the national rankings. During that stretch, the Phoenix won its first five games by a combined score of 14-2, staged a 3-0 road comeback to defeat Delaware 4-3 and drew on the road against ACC opponent Wake Forest. 
  • Vatne earned CAA Player of the Year after notching 10 goals and seven assists to lead the Phoenix in both categories. He became Elon's first conference player of the year since Daniel Lovitz took home the award for the SoCon in 2013.  
  • Victor Stromsten, Tomasz Wroblewski, Charlie Kitch and Veltri also earned All-CAA recognition, with all four earning a spot on the second team.  
  • Additionally, head coach Marc Reeves took home CAA Coach of the Year for the second time in three seasons after also winning the award in 2022.  
 
New Look CAA Soccer 
  • Starting in 2025, the CAA will feature two divisions for men's soccer – a North and South Division.   
  • Elon is part of the South Division alongside Campbell, College of Charleston, UNCW and William & Mary.   
  • The Phoenix will face the other four South Division teams twice during the regular season, with one game at home and one on the road.    
  • At the end of the regular season, the top three teams from each division will qualify for the CAA Championship. The top seed in each division will receive a bye to the semifinals while the Nos. 2 and 3 seeds in both the North and South will clash in the quarterfinals.   
 
Scouting Campbell 
  • Campbell is 8-4-4 on the season and 3-1-2 in CAA play. The Camels are one point behind Elon for first place in the CAA South Division.  
  • The Camels are coming off a 3-2 midweek victory against USC Upstate on Tuesday. Campbell scored a pair of early second-half goals to take control of the contest. 
  • Campbell fell 3-2 against UNCW on Saturday in its most recent CAA outing. The Camels led 2-0 before the Seahawks scored the final three goals of the match.  
  • Campbell is the CAA's top scoring offense with 30 goals scored on the season (1.9 per game). The Camels have attempted 34 more shots than the next best in the conference.  
  • Additionally, the Camels boast the conference's third best scoring defense, surrendering just 1.06 goals per game on the season.  
  • Ethan Roberts leads Campbell and ranks No. 3 in the CAA with six goals on the season. He is also No. 5 in the conference with a team-best 13 points.  
  • Marco Wright (4) and Lotem Ben Dov (3) are behind Roberts for the team lead in goals.  
  • Max Leviton has posted four shutouts in goal for the Camels this season. He has started 15 of their 16 matches and holds a goals against average of 1.04. 
  • Dustin Fonder is in his 11th season as Campbell's head coach.
