EDISTO BEACH, S.C. – The Elon women's golf team owns a five-shot lead after 18 holes played at the Edisto Island Invitational. Four Phoenix golfers finished the first round among the top 15 individually, including sophomore
Emma Hansen and senior
Ashley Lafontaine, who are in a three-way tie for first place at 1-over-par 72.
The Phoenix shot 10-over 294 in the opening round, which was moved up a day due to the expectation of inclement weather in the Edisto Beach, South Carolina, area on Monday. Georgia State (+15), host College of Charleston (+16), Campbell (+24) and Stetson (+26) rounded out the top five teams through 18 holes.
Hansen and Lafontaine carded two front-nine birdies apiece; both Phoenix birdied the par-5 hole 5 while Hansen notched another on hole 2 and Lafontaine added her second on hole 8. Sophomore
Kelly Zhao (+3) is close behind in a tie for fifth place after shooting 3-over 74, while senior
Annie Wu is tied for 15th at 5-over 76. Wu helped Elon to its first-place finish after day one with the team's only two back-nine birdies on holes 15 and 16.
