Elon Hosts UNCW For Senior Night

ELON – With its nonconference slate now finished, the Elon University men's soccer team (5-2-5, 2-0-2 CAA) shifts its attention back to CAA play Saturday night, as the Phoenix hosts UNCW (2-2-0 CAA) at Rudd Field on Senior Night.

Senior Night 
 
The UNCW Series  
  • Saturday will be the 18th all-time meeting between Elon and UNCW. 
  • The Phoenix holds a narrow 8-6-3 edge over the Seahawks in the all-time series.  
  • The conference rivals have squared off 11 times since Elon joined the CAA, with Elon holding a 5-4-2 advantage during that span.  
  • Prior to not facing each other last season, Elon and UNCW had played every year since 2013.  
  • Elon and UNCW met earlier this season in the CAA opener for both teams. The Phoenix won 2-1 on Aug. 30 for its first conference victory.  
  • Elon is 5-1-1 against the Seahawks at Rudd. UNCW's only win over the Phoenix at Elon came in 2018.  
  • The Phoenix is unbeaten in its four clashes with the Seahawks with three wins and a draw in those contests.  
 
UNCW Rematch 
  • Elon defeated UNCW in Wilmington, 2-1, on Aug. 30 for its first win and first conference victory of the season.  
  • The Phoenix netted a pair of first-half goals to take a 2-0 lead into the break. Einar Ness scored his first goal with the Phoenix in the 16th minute before Dominik Renz added his first career goal in the 38th minute.  
  • Martin Kozak assisted on both Elon goals for his first points with the maroon and gold. Jahmir Flowers also tallied an assist on Renz's goal.  
  • UNCW found the scoreboard in the 71st minute on a goal from Amare Lucas, but the Phoenix held off the Seahawks down the stretch to pick up three points in the conference standings.  
  • In goal, Jackson Leavitt picked up his first complete victory with the Phoenix, making six saves.  
 
Last Time Out 
  • Elon battled No. 7 Duke to a 1-1 draw at Koskinen Stadium in Durham on Tuesday night.  
  • Flowers scored the first goal of the match in the 23rd minute, converting off a feed from Oscar Tonidandel. It was his first goal of the season and the third of his career. The goal was Elon's only shot of the first half.  
  • With Elon still leading 1-0, Duke went down a man in the 70th minute when Aleksandar Vukovic took down Renz on a sprint toward the box, picking up a red card. 
  • Despite being down a man, the Blue Devils pressured Elon's back line in the final stages of the contest. In the 84th minute, Thomas Vold finally put Duke on the board, tying the score at 1-1. 
  • Leavitt made two more saves after Duke's goal to secure the tie for the Phoenix. 
  • The Blue Devils entered Tuesday as the nation's top scoring offense, averaging 3.2 goals per contest. The Phoenix held them scoreless for the first 83 minutes and allowed just six Duke shots on goal.  
  • This was Elon's second tie against a top 10 team this season, as the Phoenix previously tied then No. 10 UNCG on Sept. 30. This is the first time the Phoenix has posted multiple wins or ties against ranked opponents in a single season since 2015. 
 
CAA Success 
  • Elon currently sits atop the CAA South division with eight points after going 2-0-2 in in its first four conference clashes. Campbell is also at the top of the table with eight points. 
  • The Phoenix is two points clear of UNCW, who sits alone in third place in the standings.  
  • Elon defeated the Seahawks, 2-1, in the first conference match for both teams on Aug. 29. The Phoenix then knocked off College of Charleston on Sept. 6 at Rudd, 1-0.  
  • The Phoenix has tied its last two CAA matches against William & Mary (1-1) on Sept. 20 and Campbell (0-0) on Sept. 26. 
  • Elon will face all four CAA South teams again to close the regular season. The Phoenix's final four matches are against CAA South opponents.  
 
Defense, Defense, Defense 
  • Elon has allowed just five goals through its first 12 matches. The Phoenix has posted seven clean sheets on the season, including a stretch of four in a row that came to an end on Sept. 20 at William & Mary.  
  • The Phoenix leads the CAA and is No. 6 nationally in goals against average (0.42). Elon has allowed four fewer goals than the next best CAA team.  
  • Leavitt has played every minute in goal this season for the Phoenix. He has made 34 saves and ranks No. 6 nationally in save percentage (.872) as well as No. 8 in goals against average (.42). 
  • The Phoenix has yet to allow a goal at Rudd this season, with six of the team's seven clean sheets coming at home.  
  • Elon ranks in the top 20 in the country in shutout percentage (.700).  
  • Msabaha has logged all 1,080 minutes for Elon this season. Mucchetti (991), Weston Jonke (980) and Levy have also surpassed 900 minutes on the season.  Elon has allowed just four of its first 12 opponents to reach double digit shot attempts in a game.  
 
Renz The Rookie 
  • Renz has quickly emerged as one of Elon's top offensive producers in his debut campaign with the Phoenix. 
  • The redshirt sophomore is tied for the team lead with seven points (3g, 1a) and had a four-game point streak earlier this season.  
  • All three of Renz's goals this season have been game-winning tallies, including two against CAA opponents UNCW and College of Charleston. He ranks No. 2 in the conference in game-winning goals, trailing only Hofstra's Laurie Goddard (4).  
  • Renz took home back-to-back CAA Rookie of the Week honors on Sept. 1 and Sept. 8, becoming the first Elon player to win the weekly honor twice in a season since Scott Vatne in 2021.  
  • Renz has made eight consecutive starts for the Phoenix and has played 65-plus minutes in nine of the last 10 matches.  
 
Kozak Contributing  
  • Kozak is tied with Renz for a team best seven points (2g, 3a). He has scored two of Elon's last four goals.   
  • Kozak leads the Phoenix with three assists through the first 12 games this season, all of which he has started. 
  • The junior is also tied with Renz for the most points by an Elon player in CAA matches (4).  
  • Kozak is one of three Elon players, along with Mucchetti and Veltri, with multiple assists on the season and has contributed on five of Elon's 10 goals as a team.  
  • Kozak is tied for the fourth most assists among CAA players, trailing only Monmouth's Jakob Friedman (8), Stony Brook's Alex Fleury (6) and Drexel's Morgan Worsfold-Gregg (5). 
 
Defending Regular Season Champs 
  • Elon is coming off its second regular season CAA title in the last three seasons after topping the league table in 2024 with a 6-2 conference mark. 
  • Needing a victory in the regular season finale against Campbell to clinch the regular season crown, Elon came away with a 2-1 road victory behind goals from Scott Vatne and Mucchetti.  
  • The Phoenix finished last season with a 10-7-1 overall record. As the top seed in the CAA Championship, Elon hosted a semifinal match against No. 4 seeded Hofstra, losing 2-0 to the eventual conference champions.  
  • Elon went its first eight matches without a defeat and rose to as high as No. 10 in the national rankings. During that stretch, the Phoenix won its first five games by a combined score of 14-2, staged a 3-0 road comeback to defeat Delaware 4-3 and drew on the road against ACC opponent Wake Forest. 
  • Vatne earned CAA Player of the Year after notching 10 goals and seven assists to lead the Phoenix in both categories. He became Elon's first conference player of the year since Daniel Lovitz took home the award for the SoConn in 2013.  
  • Victor Stromsten, Tomasz Wroblewski, Charlie Kitch and Veltri also earned All-CAA recognition, with all four earning a spot on the second team.  
  • Additionally, head coach Marc Reeves took home CAA Coach of the Year for the second time in three seasons after also winning the award in 2022.  
 
New Look CAA Soccer 
  • Starting in 2025, the CAA will feature two divisions for men's soccer – a North and South Division.   
  • Elon is part of the South Division alongside Campbell, College of Charleston, UNCW and William & Mary.   
  • The Phoenix will face the other four South Division teams twice during the regular season, with one game at home and one on the road.    
  • At the end of the regular season, the top three teams from each division will qualify for the CAA Championship. The top seed in each division will receive a bye to the semifinals while the Nos. 2 and 3 seeds in both the North and South will clash in the quarterfinals.   
 
Scouting UNCW 
  • The Seahawks enter Saturday with a 3-5-2 overall record and a 2-2-0 mark in CAA matches.  
  • UNCW lost its most recent match to CAA South opponent William & Mary, 2-0, on Oct. 4.  
  • The Seahawks earned a 3-3 tie against previously top-ranked ranked Wake Forest on Sept. 16. UNCW scored the final two goals to earn the result, with Bryan Miralrio delivering in the 71st minute before Christian Acevedo converted on the tying penalty kick in the final minute.  
  • UNCW also played NC State on Oct. 1 when the Wolfpack were No. 2 in the country. The Seahawks fell 3-0 at home.  
  • UNCW has two conference victories this season, both coming at home – a 4-2 triumph over College of Charleston on Sept. 20 and a 5-0 shutout against Wiliam & Mary on Sept. 13.  
  • The Seahawks average more shots per match as a team than any in the CAA (15.5). Osei Gyamfi is leading the conference with 3.3 shot attempts per game.  
  • Gyamfi is pacing the Seahawks with nine points (3g, 3a) on the season. His three goals are tied with Acevedo for the most on the team.  
  • Trey Smiley has started every game in goal for UNCW this season. He has made 37 saves and has a .712 save percentage.  
  • The Seahawks are led by head coach Aidan Heaney, who is in his 25th season at the helm of the program.
