Angel Leads Elon To Overtime Win

Elon Defeats ETSU 65-56 In Season-Opening Road Victory

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Jayda Angel scored 13 of her 16 points after halftime, including a game-tying jumper with three seconds left in regulation, as the Elon women's basketball team opened its season with a 65-56 overtime win at ETSU on Monday night.

THE RUNDOWN
  • Elon jumped out to an early 11-3 lead behind strong starts from Quinzia Fulmore and LaNae' Corbet. Despite a late push from ETSU, led by seven points from Carmen Richardson, Elon took a 15-12 lead into the second quarter behind Samira Khalil's buzzer-beating jumper.
  • ETSU took momentum at the start of the second quarter, using a 13-4 run to grab a 25-19 lead with 4:49 left in the half. Elon fought to close the gap behind back-to-back threes from Ashanti Fox, but the Bucs took a 31-27 lead into halftime.
  • Elon battled back in the third quarter, trimming a nine-point deficit to tie the game at 41 heading into the fourth. Jayda Angel led the Phoenix comeback with six points in the quarter, while Kierra Morrow and Fox added key baskets to fuel the run. Elon's defensive pressure forced multiple Bucs turnovers, helping the Phoenix close the frame on a 9-2 surge.
  • Both teams battled fiercely down the stretch, but a clutch jumper from Angel with three seconds remaining in regulation tied the game at 51-51 and forced overtime in the season opener.
  • In the final five minutes, Elon pulled away with key buckets from Laila Anderson and Angel, extending their lead with second-chance points and free throws. Elon maintained control and finished strong to secure a 65-56 win in overtime.
