SAN DIEGO – Elon University women's tennis junior
Simone Bergeron earned her first two ITA Conference Masters victoreis Friday, winning a pair in the consolation singles draw. The tournament is being contested at the Barnes Tennis Center.
Bergeron defeated Oakland's Martyna Piechowicz, 6-1, 6-2, to start the day. She broke Piechowicz in her opening service game and never looked back, dropping just three games on the way to victory. The three games dropped were tied for the fewest for Bergeron in a match this fall. The victory was the junior's seventh of the campaign.
The junior then came from a set down to win a thrilling quarterfinal encounter against Oleksandra Ovsiienko of Fairleigh Dickinson. Ovsiienko won the first, 6-3, but Bergeron scratched out the second frame in a tiebreak, 7-6 (4), to force a decider. Bergeron came through the final set, 6-3, to move into the final four of the consolation flight.
The victory over Ovsiienko was Bergeron's first to come in a full third set this fall. She has now 4-1 in match tiebreaks or full deciding sets this fall.
Bergeron will be back tomorrow for her consolation semifinal against the winner of Tarleton State's Maria Castano and Northern Arizona's Patrycja Niewiadomska. Bergeron's semifinal is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. EST.
