ELON – The Elon men's basketball team held Northern Illinois without a field goal over the final 9:48 as the Phoenix rallied to an 85-79 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Schar Center.
Â
Kacper Klaczek and
Chandler Cuthrell paced the comeback with a combined 44 points, as Elon erased a seven-point halftime deficit to secure its second straight win and improve to 6-4 on the year. The victory marked the second time this season the Phoenix have won back-to-back games and represented Elon's first win when trailing at the break.
Â
Klaczek led all scorers with 23 points on an efficient 9-of-11 shooting performance, adding six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Cuthrell followed with 21 points – his ninth 20-point effort in 10 games – and six boards, consistently putting pressure on the rim and drawing fouls.
Randall Pettus II contributed 13 points, while
DeMarco Johnson and
Ned Hull provided key minutes off the bench.
Â
Northern Illinois (3-7) shot efficiently in the opening half and carried a 48-41 lead into intermission, but Elon flipped the game after halftime by controlling the paint and pushing the tempo. The Phoenix shot 55.2% from the floor in the second half and finished with a 48-26 advantage in points in the paint.
Â
Trailing 79-76 with 2:38 to go, Klaczek and Cuthrell scored the game's final nine points to secure the win. Klaczek tied the game with a three-point play and then put the Phoenix ahead for good with a reverse dunk on the baseline with 1:15 to go. Another three-point play – this time by Cuthrell – with 31 seconds on the clock pushed Elon ahead by five. Elon's defensive execution down the stretch limited NIU to just nine points – all via free throws – in the final nine-plus minutes. Elon finished 24-of-33 from the stripe on the afternoon.
