ELON – The Elon University women's basketball team battled back in a tight contest but fell just short, dropping a hard-fought 67–66 game to Longwood Sunday afternoon.
LaNae' Corbett led the team in scoring with a season-high 17 points on 67% shooting (8-for-12), while
Ashlee Shaw finished with a career-high 14 points, going 3-for-5 from deep.
Elon falls to 3–6, while Longwood improves to 8–4.
THE RUNDOWN
- Elon jumped out to a 12–2 lead with contributions from four different players, forcing a Longwood timeout. The Lancers responded with a 9–2 run to cut the deficit to three at 14–11. The teams traded baskets the rest of the quarter, with Elon holding a 27–19 advantage after one.
- Longwood continued to chip away in the second quarter, eventually taking a 31–30 lead with 4:02 remaining in the half. Elon responded to pull back within three late, heading into the break trailing 40–37.
- LaNae' Corbett led a surge for the Phoenix in the third quarter, scoring seven of the team's ten points to trail 48–47 heading into the final frame.
- The teams went back and forth to open the fourth quarter, with back-to-back baskets from Ashlee Shaw and Quinzia Fulmore giving Elon a 56–52 lead with 6:52 remaining. Longwood closed the gap back to one at 56–55 and later took the lead at 60–59 before two more Corbett baskets gave Elon a 63–60 lead with 1:52 left in the game. In the final two minutes, Longwood and Elon traded clutch shots, but Longwood ultimately held a slim lead as Elon fell 67–66.
NOTES
- Ashlee Shaw, Tamia Watkins, and Ruby Willard all made their first collegiate starts, joining Maraja Pass and Tyana Walker.
- LaNae' Corbett reached double figures for the sixth time this season with a team-high 17 points, while Shaw reached double figures for the first time in her career with 14.
- Tamia Watkins, Shaw, and Walker led the team in rebounds with six apiece, while Pass matched her season-high in assists with five.
- Pass and Watkins paced the Phoenix with three steals each, a season-high for Watkins and a mark that matched Pass's season-best.
- Nine of the 10 Phoenix players who saw action in the first half scored points.
- For the sixth time this season, Elon held their opponent under 25% shooting from three-point range, with Longwood going 4-for-18 (22%).
