Women’s Basketball Falls Short Versus Campbell

ELON, N.C. — The Elon women's basketball team (13-10, 7-5 CAA) came up short against Campbell (15-9, 8-4 CAA), falling 48-45 in Schar Center on Sunday, Feb. 16.

THE RUNDOWN
  • Elon trailed 9-6 midway through the first quarter but responded with a 4-1 run to cut the deficit to 11-10. Back-to-back baskets from Jayda Angel and Hannah Dereje then put the Phoenix ahead 14-11 to close the quarter.
  • Campbell opened the second quarter with a 10-0 run, taking a 21-14 lead with 6:27 remaining in the half. However, Elon locked in on both ends of the court, holding the Camels scoreless for the rest of the half while going on a 12-0 run to enter halftime with a 26-21 advantage.
  • The teams traded baskets to open the third quarter until Campbell strung together a 6-0 run to tie the game at 34-34 with 1:44 left in the period. Angel responded with four straight points to give Elon a 38-34 lead heading into the final quarter.
  • The Camels opened the final quarter with a 10-0 run, pulling ahead 44-38 with 2:01 remaining. Angel snapped Elon's scoring drought with back-to-back jumpers, cutting the deficit to 44-42 with 50 seconds left. Campbell responded with consecutive scores to extend its lead to 48-42. A last-second three-pointer from Raven Preston brought the Phoenix within three, but it wasn't enough as Elon fell 48-45.

  • Elon maintained its starting lineup with Iycez Adams, Laila Anderson, Ava Leroux, Maraja Pass, and Raven Preston.
  • Jayda Angel led the team in scoring for the eighth time this season, matching her career-high with 20 points.
  • Adams paced the Phoenix with seven rebounds, while Kamryn Doty recorded a team-high three steals.
  • Elon held the edge over Campbell in steals (10-3), blocks (3-0), and bench points (30-5).
UP NEXT
  • The Phoenix returns to Schar Center to host Delaware on Friday, Feb. 21, for its Black History Month game, followed by a 1 p.m. matchup against Drexel on Sunday.
