Duke improves to 1-0 on the season with the win and Elon drops to 0-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Elon got on the board first as Lila Ceribelli drew a foul and scored on the ensuing free position attempt less than three minutes into the action.
- Duke scored the next 10 goals to take control but Elon ended the streak as Mia Zebley found the back of the net. The Blue Devils led 10-2 at the break.
- After Duke started the scoring in the second half, Zebley posted her second point of the day on an assist to Ana Lee Vandiver. Vandiver followed with back-to-back goals about two minutes later to make it 11-4.
- Freshman Addie Gilner brought Elon even closer as her bouncing shot found the back of the net for her first career goal.
- Duke, though, closed the third with three straight goals for a 14-5 lead.
- Zebley got her third point of the day on a free position goal early in the fourth that made the score 14-6.
- Vandiver completed the hat trick with a spinning move to evade two defenders before burying the shot. That concluded Elon's scoring in the 16-7 loss.
NOTES AND STATS
- Caitlin Walsh had a career-high six groundballs and added seven saves.
- Ana Lee Vandiver recorded her second career hat trick with three goals. Dating back to last year, she has scored a goal in four straight contests.
- Mia Zebley tied for a team-high with three points, posting two goals and an assist.
- Freshman Addie Gilner scored her first career goal in her first collegiate action.
- Brooke Scheuermann and Eliza Ritter tied for team-high honors with three caused turnovers apiece. For Ritter, it was her first game in maroon and gold after transferring from Connecticut College.
- Duke outshot Elon 26-21, including 23-17 on goal. The Blue Devils held a large advantage in the draw circle, 20-6.
- Elon had just 12 turnovers, four fewer than Duke, and caused 16 turnovers, six more than Duke.
- The Phoenix was 2-of-5 on free-position attempts, while Duke went 0-for-3.
